The speaker claims that the study of history is of some value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives. I find this assertion to be specious. Although history offers few
foolproof panaceas for present-day issues irrelevant to living before, it has still help us in a great sense. There are no such overnight progress, but perseverant
trial and error based on what has been done that bring the human civilization to what it is today.

To begin with, history has helped us form our mode of thinking unconsciously. Our lives are consisted of varies decisions, from where to live to what to eat. We make decisions on the basis of the experience from people around us, especially older generations or even our ancestors. We are part of history as history is part of us. In this sense, it is inevitable that we benefit from the study of history.


In addition, lessons are drawn from the past events, even they are irrelevant to our daily lives. The demise of Maya civilization reminder us to take care of the only earth we share, paying more attention to the change of the climate, although the history of Maya are so far away from our daily lives.

Finally, studying human history can help us understand and appreciate the mores, values, and ideas of past cultures. A heightened awareness of cultural evolution, in turn, help us formulate informed and reflective values and ideas for ourselves.

To sum up, the speaker fails to recognize that in all our activities and decisions history can inspire, inform, guide, and nurture.
