      Comparing sick leaving days and satisfaction between the people in store and factory, the author concludes that workers who work part time instead of full time have better health and improved morale and recommend workers should be allowed to reduce their workload. However, it is presumptuous judge the full time workers are really overloaded according to this unproven assumption.   
      To begin with, the argument assumes that more sick leaving days and satisfaction reflects full time workers have worse heath and dissatisfied with their job. Yet the mere fact that essential difference in the two kinds of works, which was overlooked by the author, hardly suffices to infer such any trend in comparison. The jobs in factory may be more boring and troublesome in store and workers dissatisfaction is not about the hours of working but job itself. Without better evidence of part time workers have better health and improved morale, it is just as likely that there is no such trend in the difference, in which event the author’s recommendation would amount to especially poor evidence.
      Even assuming the part time workers really have better health and morale, the reduction of workload might not be conducive to solve the problem, especially if the more sick leavings are incurred by the heavier work in factory than in store. Besides, the sick leavings might just reflect the low morale of workers who are not pleased with their jobs or some other variations during the two years. Without ruling out these and other reasons why full time workers in factory have more sick leaving and lower satisfaction, the author cannot justify the less workload would benefit people’s health and workers’ morale, let along decreasing the sick leaving.

Nor can author corroborate the study about the satisfaction could reveal the situation in the factory in Workville. May be the study is about the stores and factories all over the whole country and do not specially reflect the attitudes of workers in the factory in Workville. Or perhaps, the most of workers in the factory are actually satisfied with their jobs. Or perhaps, other the full time worker, the majority of workers in the factory is part time worker, and the increase of the sick leaving days is irrelevant with the working hours. In short, the manager cannot defend the recommendation of reduction of working hours on the basis of what might be a flase analogy between the store and factory.


In sum, the argument relies on what might amounts to false analogies between the workers in factory and in store in Workville, as well as a comparison which might or might not apply to Workville. To strengthen the argument the manager should provide better evidence of difference in two kinds of workers in Workville, and clear evidence that decrease in working hours or changing full time works into part time could really uphold workers’ the morale and health. Even with the additional evidence, in order to properly evaluate the argument we would need to know why, compared the last year, the days of sick leave drop in this year in store and accrue in factory, and in Workville the days of sick leave in former is really lower than in latter.
