ISSUE131 - "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

Do arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society? It's not an either-or question, as in different time, for different people, arts function different and the source and purpose of one work, universal or individual, are often depend on the artist himself/herself.

Arts arise when people get rid of starvation and have extra time and energy. In the time, arts are always created by the group, and therefore presenting belief and wise of the community. Those art works attempt to record or reproduce the life and serve as a way of sending message to their god. We can frequently see in those pictures, sculptured in stones found in some ancient habitants, large group of people dancing around bonfire. Historicists tell us that the picture shows people were praying to their deity, a revelation of the belief of the society.

Later on, artists tended to rely on patrons, by satisfying their requirement to make a living. Separated from the lower class, patrons and their servants, the artists are ignorant of the arduous life of ordinary people. Accordingly, the art works catering to the sovereign have little bearing with the ideas and impulses of the broad society, excluding the masses, let alone revealing them.

The surge of Renaissance shakes off the bonds fettering the artists. Some began to seek and reproduce the deep value harbored by the society and their life. The Potato Eaters painted by Van Gogh, revealed the awful living conditions of the miners. The folk music gets more and more popular among the masses, for it sings the pleasure, love, sadness, melancholy, depression and hesitation in the bottom of their heart. As for literature, ever-increasing sales are works showing the deep feelings of the individual, sometimes even themselves not aware. The Harry Porter, a series of book showing the growth of an orphan, its unrivalled success derives from the deep exploration of every character, whose prototype can be easily found in our everyday life, rather the trilling unrealistic magic.

On the other hand, some artists turn to internal world and consider art a mean to transfer the otherwise hidden impulses and thought streaming of individual. Take the fine arts for example, during various art period in latest centuries, impressionism led by Manet, followed by cubism, fauvism, surrealism, painters transform from the expression of the value of a society to individual feeling or just a exhibition of colors. In many cases, the skills that creates particular effects, such as contrasting color and comparison of light and shadow. Such works tend to hide, let alone disclose the ideas and impulses of an individual or society..

All in all, the function of arts depends on the definition of arts by the artists, whether arts should be a means to reveal and present the value of a society or just exhibit the freak in their mind.

但是这一切时代的arts真的是depend on the artist himself/herself吗？

比如你说到的文艺复兴，艺术家们开始不再为patrons创作了，但这真的是艺术家自身突然转变风格吗，没有生产力的发展，没有资本主义的萌芽，Van Gogh也难以脱离社会的发展来revealed the awful living conditions of the miners. 没有美国的繁荣昌盛科技进步CG发展的世界领先水平，Harry Porter估计也难以呈现在银幕之上，甚至可以这么说，没有美国的互联网和中国的改革开放，或许LZ还难以知道世界上还有Harry Porter。

艺术类的文章啊！想了好久，也没有更好的切入点。对自己之失望啊。。。
mm的看法，确实看的比较全面，不过也有点强人所难，issue总共才那么五六百字，难以面面俱到，ets也有说，只要言之有理即可。
而且题中是说艺术的本质或其作用是否reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulse of a society，而不是reveal the influence of a society in a comprehensive way，像改革和科技发展，很难说是the hidden ideas and impulse of a society.（不知说清楚了没）
还是要谢谢你呀，当时没考虑到还有这方面的影响。
