TOPIC: ARGUMENT188 - A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

In the argument, the author claims that kappa opioids(KO) should be prescribed for women only and all medication should be reevaluated on men. To support his claim, the author offers a research administered the feeling about the pain based on 28 men and 20 women questioned. However, closer scrutiny shows how little does the evidence bolster his argument.

First of all, the author proclaims the argument based on a research of 28 men and 20 women. While it is too small a number, there is possibility that these people are an aberration that most of other people could feel the opposite. As the author does not offer a statistics of research based on more people, the researched at the first place is not persuasive.

Secondly, the author cites a immeasurable feeling to bolster his claim. Lack of more liable information to show that women are indeed feeling less pain than men, we can also consider that the women are actually suffering more pain than men when they claim the opposite or they are in fact still suffering pain when they said no. Moreover, different people have different descriptions about pain and when there is no other comparison to measure the level, we cannot figure out whether they are feeling the same level of pain as we suppose. Falling to take these possibilities into consideration, the author unfortunately renders his claim unreliable.

Thirdly, even assuming that KO are more effective on women than men, there is no dedication that men should be given other pain medication and women should be for sure prescribed this kind. Without any more information about other pain medication, there is still likelihood that no better pain medication existed for men and there is other kind better than KO when it comes to women. Not ruling out there situation, the author's claim is weakened.

Fourthly, the author unfairly claims that when women and men are different on suffering pain, the doctor should reevaluate all the medication. However, the author extends the pain medication to all the medication when common sense tell us that there is unsuitable for all the medication. While the research is based on the pain feeling, there is no need to reevaluate the medication irrelevant of killing pain. For instance, the medication cures the cold or stomach will change nothing after being reevaluated. Not figuring out the differences of various function of medication, the author unluckily makes his claim groundless.

To sum up , the author claims that they should reevaluate all the medication and choose differently based on the research, but he commits some logical fallacy. To better support his claim, the author should make a research based on more people. To further develop his argument, he should find a way to measure the level of pain and figure out under which situation KO is the best choice.
