The contention holds the opinion that even though most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue, loyalty-to one's friends, school, place of employment, or to institution, are often a destructive force. In general I agree with this conclusion. However, with proper guidance, the loyalty can alter to positive force, and can still be defined a virtue to some degree finally.

Loyalty indicates that the people trust their friends or institutions, and will follow the command, help to realize the same goal, devote their own energy and affection and the forth to a friend or an institution. Since loyalty is one assort of sense, the domination in one's heart of loyalty may easily evolve into blind devotion, and could eventually bedim people’s judgment ability. Thus the power without a criterion except its resource-loyalty-might leads to destructive effects. Li Hongzhi, the establisher of cult Falun Gong was once esteemed by his followers. These people are so loyal to Li Hongzhi that they even believe his nonsense. People burn themselves in Tiananmen Square to attain eternity in their lives according to Li's thoughts. The negative consequence proves that the loyalty in this case is a destructive force.


However, loyalty itself helps build a strong relationship between people and people or people and institutions. Because loyalty are usually accomplished with admiration, trust, and understanding, so with sufficient loyalty from people around, this institution can be efficient and tight in structure and it is the same case with a single person. Soldiers in the battleground are required to be loyal to the commander as well as to their motherland because merely with loyalty can they fight bravely or even sacrifice themselves to win the battle. We may see that loyalty plays a positive role here.

Finally, the key to make loyalty a positive force instead of a destructive one depends on admirers' judgment. Without contemplation by oneself, the loyalty essentially is a kind of blind devotion, which can be fomented or made use of by some deliberate people. After one's independent consideration, pursuit of righteousness, and some correct guidance, the loyalty will turn into positive forces at last. Loyalty serving right purposes should still be recognized as a virtue.

In sum, loyalty can be destructive if wrongly guided by evil people, however can also be positive if led under proper target. To alternate the destructive force to positive one, the society and government should offer guidance, and encourage civilians to reflect independently and pursue righteousness as well.
