TOPIC: ISSUE28 - "Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."
In different disciplines, the importance of facts and the ideas, trends, and concepts are different. In some fields, facts are less importance than ideas, trends, and concepts, the procedure of deducing these facts are more worth learning. But in other fields, facts are usually the beginning of learning, or the fundamental assumptions of study, without awareness of these facts, one cannot study profoundly.
To begin with, process is usually more significant than result. Facts in study are like results, which are obtained by previous people who researched tirelessly in science and humanities. Philosophy is a good example, It is well known that learning philosophy is learning a way of thinking. So, to remember a philosopher’s theory is not as to deeply understand the way the philosopher gets the idea. Also in history courses, facts especially year-table of events happened has been over emphasized. Teachers always force students to rote the year table of events clearly. This is pointless except in examinations, because learning history without knowing the backgrounds and conditions of that time make no sense. The main propose of learning history is to use history to light our future. Only remember the time which events occur cannot achieve this goal. In order to apply historical lessons in today, we should clearly understand the reasons which trigger the occurrences of events. So as you can see, in the humanities, facts are always not as important as the ideas, trends, and concepts which deduce the facts. Students should memorize facts after they have studied the profound ideas.
However, facts are necessary in study; because facts are bases of some science. Many facts are like maxims or common senses that we do not why it is, but it is right and accepted by people. For example, the first fact we known in mathematics is the equation: one and one is two, to image if we do not accept this, for instance, we now say that one and one not equal two instead of three, what will happened? Not only all the mathematical theories should be changed, but in fact all science theories should be changed, because all latter achievement is based on this fact. From this perspective we see the importance of bearing facts in science; we should remember some facts before we learn ideas, trends and concepts.
But whatever we learn facts before of after knowing ideas and concepts, we should notice that the ultimate aim to study various causes is to apply them in practice. In order to flexibility use this knowledge, one should have a profound understanding of ideas and concepts. If one only known the fact -without noticing the conditions of reducing the fact- once the condition of leading the fact change, he will not know how to change to meet different situations. For this reason, students who have learned only facts have learned very little.
In sum, although the importance of facts and the ideas, trends, and concepts are different in various disciplines, it is certainly students who only know facts indeed learn very little. |
