ISSUE 40
40. "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
分类:社会

The arguer seems to suggest that scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes contribution to the larger society, but whether they pursue their own interests, regardless of however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests might be. Although many people may embrace this idea wholeheartedly, I have my reservations. Admittedly, scientists can gain success at their individual interests, but exceedingly used interests would disobey our ethics and morality, which would conduce to calamities. So they should not break the bottom line of ethics while pursuing their own interests.
In this era of multiplex world, in most times, pursuing one’s own interests can result in a good result. We are taught many times that interests are the best teacher. Alfred Nobel, who founded the Nobel Prize, devoted himself to the study of explosives, and especially to the safe manufacture and use of nitroglycerine (discovered in 1847 by Ascanio Sobrero). A big explosion occurred on the 3 September 1864 at his factory in Heleneborg in Stockholm, killing five people, among them Alfred's younger brother Emil. Although he was deeply mournful, his interests gave him strength to stand pat. At last, when the explosion occurred, people thought he was dead, but he succeeded. From this example, interests actually can inspire people to strive for their goals.
However, sometimes researching freely might be a waste of time and money. It is irresponsible for taxpayers who devote to scholars’ and researchers’ research funds. The money would have been used to solve more urgent troubles. For the time being, thousands of people are starving to death, while some scholars and researchers lead a luxurious life. Obviously, it is unfair, so scientists should be certain that their work makes a contribution to the masses of people.
Moreover, interests may be misused, which would lead to disasters. The problem now facing humanity is: What is going to be done with all this knowledge and technology? As is so often pointed out, knowledge is a two-edged weapon which can be used equally for good or evil. It is now being used indifferently for both. Could any spectacle, for instance, be more grimly whimsical than that of gunners using science to shatter men’s bodies. In World War Ⅱ,some scientists were used by fascists, they experimented on humans to incubate germs. Besides, if scientists neglect the society’s trepidation and bring cloning children into the world, a series of moral problems will tag on. We have to ask ourselves very seriously what will happen if this twofold use of interests, with its ever-increasing power, continues. Look back to the examples aforementioned, it can be drawn that under no circumstance should a scientist purse his own interest at the cost of the masses.
To sum up, basing my conclusion on the illustrations and expositions mentioned above, accordingly, I hold that though interest is one important thing for the study and research conducted by scholars and researchers, the fundamental goal of their work is to benefit the large part of the society to make it more harmonious. Scientists and scholars can make their interests conform to the needs of the society and make great breakthroughs, thus they would enjoy the love and esteem of the people.
