TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."

The speaker asserts that if a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable. Obviously, the assertion is too extreme. As far as I am concerned, the means should not be against the principles of ethics and laws. Otherwise, it will result in not only failing to be admitted by society but also leaving their goal further.
To begin with, in order to achieve the goal, it is necessary to adopt a right means rather than wrong means because wrong means always make one leaving his or her goals further. 'The shortest way is not the fastest way'. The old saying is constantly used to point out that the only way to achieve success is to follow the path of virtue while other ways seem to be shorter but always cause a bad result and cannot reach the successful ends. We can see no further than developing economy. In order to accelerate the speed of developing economy, many countries even seek temporary economic development at the expense of the environment. In the Haiti earthquake, reduction of forest areas and the leading flooding, lack of emergency services caused the deaths of thousands of people. The Haitian government also knows the importance of planting more trees and building emergency services, but they placed too much emphasis on the development of economy while ignoring environment protection and emergency services. As a result, the deadly disaster almost destroyed the country, let alone its economy. Therefore, the wrong means can make an individual or a country leaving their goals further.
What's more, even if one achieves goals by immoral or illegal means, he or she cannot enjoy the happiness of success because he or she fails to get the social identity. The ultimate goal of one’s pursuit is that enjoy the greater happiness in his or her life.
For the happiness it is essential that our achievements are accepted by the society. If we gain these goals by immoral or illegal means, we cannot get the identity of society. For example, some businessmen want to pursue interest by selling commodities with poor quality. In this case, even if they earn lots of money, they still cannot gain the esteem of others. The goal turns to be meaningless for their happiness when they take immoral or illegal means. Therefore, it is not advocated to achieve goals by means which are against the law and ethics.
Last but not least, under the premise that people's means are not against the principles of laws and ethics, we should try our best to attain our goals. The example is not hard to seek. When policemen investigate criminal cases, it is accepted to access the information of criminal suspects by some approaches which invade the privacy of the criminal suspects such as examining the criminal suspects’ records of phone conversation. When policemen are in chase of criminal suspects, they may break out the red light. The acts of invading one’s privacy and breaking out the red light are all illegal for common people in our daily life. However, in order to achieve the worthy goal to eliminate crimes, the unusual means are encouraged.
To sum up, the proper means which are not against the legal and moral principles can guarantee one stepping closer to his or her goal while immoral and illegal approaches almost leave on farther away from their targets. However, under the premise that the means are not against the laws, in order to gain the goal, some unusual means are justifiable.
