TOPIC: ARGUMENT187 - The following appeared as part of an article in a health magazine.

"A new discovery warrants a drastic change in the diets of people living in the United States. Two scientists have recently suggested that omega -3 fatty acids (found in some fish and fish oils) play a key role in mental health. Our ancestors, who ate less saturated fat and more polyunsaturated fat, including omega -3 fatty acids, were much less likely to suffer from depression than we are today. Moreover, modern societies-such as those in Japan and Taiwan-that consume large quantities of fish report depression rates lower than that in the United States. Given this link between omega -3 fatty acids and depression, it is important for all people in the United States to increase their consumption of fish in order to prevent depression."

In this article, the writer considers that ormega - 3 (O3) plays a key role in mental health, and he suggests that all Americans should increase their consumption of fish to prevent depression. To support his idea, the writer compares America contemporaries with their ancestors and Japanese and evidences shows that these people have less depression than Americans. But there are some flaws in the article and these evidences do not support the writer's idea well.

To begin with, the writer compares between America contemporaries and their ancients and draws the conclusion that ancient Americans suffered less depression than it now. This may have been because many years ago psychologies haven't give a clearly definition about what depression is so that many ancient Americans depression patients did not been diagnosed. Another reason people lived several decades ago did not have to work so many hours per week. It entirely because of the less working time that ancients America, or even some ancient people from other countries suffer less depressions. It is obviously that people nowadays and them in another era have no comparability.

Then, the writer mentions that Japanese now suffer from less depression. Not to mention that how the reports been collected we do not know, Japanese also have many different habits and customs from Americans other than eating more fish. Maybe Japanese pay more attention on their mental health and they visit doctors more frequently than Americans. It might because doctors prescribed some medicines that help Japanese prevent depression. Without ruling out the influence differences, the conclusion that the O3 help Japanese prevent depression is ungrounded.

In sum, the writer compares America with their ancients and Japanese. But both comparisons are unwarranted. The writer should find some other powerful evidences to prove his conclusion.

To support his idea, the writer compares America contemporaries with their ancestors and Japanese(不要急,分开来列清楚) and evidences shows that these people have less depression than Americans. But there are some flaws in the article and these evidences do not support the writer's idea well.

To begin with, the writer compares between America contemporaries and their ancients and draws the conclusion that ancient Americans suffered less depression than it now. Then, the writer mentions that Japanese now suffer from less depression. Not to mention that how the reports been collected we do not know, Japanese also have many different habits and customs from Americans other than eating more fish. Maybe Japanese (只有Japanese,完全忽略了台湾…)pay more attention on (to)their mental health and they visit doctors more frequently than Americans.
