TOPIC: ARGUMENT9 - The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University. "Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors." WORDS: 379 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2010-7-28 21:55:44 Without comprehensive analysis, it is unreasonable to conclude that the policy of evaluating professors have inflated Omega University students' GPA; nor can the university be sure that the abolition of this policy will deflate the GPA and ultimately, give students a cutting edge in the job market. First of all, there isn't enough evidence to prove that inflation of GPA is a direct effect of the evaluation policy, though the former seems to have come after the latter. The university may need to find out if other factors besides the evaluation policy, e.g. a change in professors' mind of the scoring criteria, or the students' strong demand for higher GPA, have caused the inflation of GPA. If the evaluation process has nothing to do with the rise in GPA, there is no reason to get rid of the policy. Second, even if the evaluation policy is indeed to be blamed for the inflation of GPA, simply terminate the policy may not be the best way to put the GPA back to the previous level. The evaluation of professors is a process widely adopted among American university in order to effectively check and improve the teaching quality. A lot of other measures can be taken to deflate the GPA. For instance, a comprehensive scoring scheme can be made to help professors to control the mean GPA of his/her students. The university can even lower all students' GPA systematically by thirty percent--back to their level fifteen years ago. But lastly, even the rationale for abolishing the evaluation policy, namely to lower the GPA to help job-hunting, may not be reasonable. Students' GPA is only part of the factors considered by potential employers. No evidence has been given to support the claim that high GPA of Omega University students than Alpha University is an obstacle for Omega job-hunters. On the other hand, even is the high GPA is an obstacle, whether all potential employers will be informed of the change of policy in Omega University to lower the GPA is not clear. Probably a lot of employers will still hold the belief that Omega students' GPAs have been inflated and automatically re-calculated their GPA to an even lower level. As a result, the proposal to abolish the evaluation policy lacks enough evidence and shall be reconsidered after more research into this issue.
