TOPIC: ARGUMENT43 - The following appeared as part of a business plan developed by the manager of the Rialto Theater.
"Despite its downtown location, the Rialto Movie Theater, a local institution for five decades, must make big changes or close its doors forever. It should follow the example of the new Apex Theater in the mall outside of town. When the Apex opened last year, it featured a video arcade, plush carpeting and seats, and a state-of-the-art sound system. Furthermore, in a recent survey, over 85 percent of respondents reported that the high price of newly released movies prevents them from going to the movies more than five times per year. Thus, if the Rialto intends to hold on to its share of a decreasing pool of moviegoers, it must offer the same features as Apex."

The manager of this plan claims that the Rialto Movie Theater is confronted with a difficult situation that its clients have met a reduction recently. Furthermore, the manager anticipates a conclusion that his theater might be closed forever unless it offer the same feather as Apex took. Close scutiny of this evidence reveals that it lends little credible support for the author's assertion.

First of all, the outcome gained by Apex might appear to lend support to the applicant's claim. However, in respect that the different locations two theaters are, the density of population might be discrepant. As time went by about fifty years, the population of the city might transferred from downtown to outside town, and then fewer moviegoers exists in the area around Rialto Theater. The truth lies somewhere closer to the fact that is is entirely possible that people will go back to downtown and bring new hope back to Rialto Theater.

Secondly, on the basis of a survey, the manager makes an anticipation about the coming years that their number of consumer will lessen. The argument supplies no evidence to substantiate this assumption. It has not showed how many people had taken the survey. If it was 200 while the number of movie-lovers in the town reached 2000, obviously, the survey obtained cannot reflect the desire of the mass. Without providing evidence that this will not occur, the author cannot convincingly conclude that moviegoers will stay at home because of the high price of the newly released films.

Thirdly, the manager suggests that imitating the meatures Apex took is a scheme which enable their clients return to Rialto’s side. Nonetheless, even assuming that the former has undertaken all the feather the latter had, or even has done better, it is possible for movie-lovers to keep staying in Apex due to the lackness of Rialto’s creation and strategy. Considering the circumstance two different theaters have, why the moviegoers alter an approximate place if the old one satisfies them already. Thus, making a complete imitation is unlikely to change the recent situation.

In conclusion, the manager’s argument is unpersuative as it stands. To bolster it he must provide cleaner evidence about the number of participated respondents who were movie-lovers. To better evaluate the argument, we would need more information about the action Rialto Theater will take and the opinions movie-lovers hold.
