The speaker claims that the art can represent some other ideas i the society, I partly agree with this idea. Art includes architecture, photography, paintings and other aspects can reveal some aspect of the society, but we can not depend on it to find the otherwise hidden impulse of a society.

Turning first to TV show, it is a kind of popular art. During the past 30 years, the subject which TV program choose as its leading is changing rapidly. For example, during the 1980', most audience would like to watch family shows such as Growing Pains. It reveals that people pay more attention on families and wish to give proper education to their children. And with time pass by, more spectators choose to watch Sex And The City, which refers the women's status are almost as high as men's, they receive the highest pay from the company, and have topics about sex such as men usually do. This kind of show reveals women's higher position and their interests. Then in the 21st century, various shows have become a magic weapon of the companies with eye-catching elements, such as Prison Break , The Big Bang Theory and Lie To Me. That kind of change also reveals that people pay more attention on the genius and would like to some adventure experience instead of the normal life.

Turning next to important architects and architectures, it seems to me that no matter in what generation, most public architecture reflect more ideas and impulses of a society than any other arts. For example, since ancient, people pay much attention on getting rid of the gravity and be closer to the sky, so they build pyramid in Egypt, build Eiffel Tower in Paris and build more sky-scraping in the cities. Architecture can reflect not only the leader's spirit, but the development of technology. It is a progressive progress. The new technical and material the architect use reveals his or her interests and the impulse of a society. For example, the new CCTV Tower which have been finished in 2008 was both praised and critics for its appearance and building method. That reveals the society's impulse especially in China that people can adjust to more different things now.

But no matter what kind of art, there is always exception in the field. Consider three of the twentieth century's most famous architects and painters: Gaudi, Le Corbusier and Picasso. Was the reason for Gaudi's 'dream' architecture, full of fantastic colors and shapes reflecting the society's idea? Le Corbusier's achievements in his late years are so rough that it can not reveal anything except his personal idea. Did Picasso's hieroglyphics paintings reflect his own feelings or the impulse of the society? In all three cases, it seems that the art reflected the artist but not the society.


In sum, in the art field one can observe a shift from style and themes reflecting broad social impulse to a more recent concern for expressing personal impulses and creative urges. In conclusion, the art can sometimes reveal the society's impulse, and it depends on different situation.
