TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

The speaker asserts that individuals should be able to tell just laws from unjust ones, and furthermore, people are responsible for not only obeying just laws but also resisting laws that are unjust. From my point of view, however, I disagree with the speaker for some obvious reasons. First, individuals can not assess a law overall and comprehensively. In addition, resistance of so-called unjust laws based on personal viewpoints will results in undesireable disaster of the public.
On the one hand, leaving the justification that whether a law is just or unjust to individuals may well be beyond his/her ability and ken. The society consists of people from all walks of life. There are Republicans*, and there are also Democrats. People have different interests so that groups of people with common interests come into being and fight against with those who occupy the vested interests in a way. If we confer the privileges* of defining unjust laws to individuals, apparently, they would disobey those laws that are against their will or interests
while meantime are supposed to guarantee the interests of the most of the masses. Such situation, in my opinion, must not be the purpose of any law. Thus, it should be the government, a delegate from the people representing the public welfare, to discriminate laws between just and unjust ones and take actions accordingly, but not any individual.

On the other hand, that people disobey laws which they believe unjust or unfair probably leads to the disorder or even total/terrible mess of our society. What subsequently comes into being after the confliction between people or cliques of contradictive interests the fierce competition between them. In a democratic country this competition contributes to the harmony of the populace as a whole in the form of co-operative competition, based on well executed laws. But, if the arbitrary disobedience of individuals to laws is tolerable or even allowed, for/since that no common rules are implemented, the society as a whole will get lost in an
inescapable crash. Those robbers and thieves, for instances, who believe certain ways of the disruption of other people's interests bring theirs, may well demonstrate this point. In this way, due to the execution of just laws also could not be guaranteed, more and more citizen will suffer from criminals of increasing numbers, and finally the community end up cities of injustice and sin.

Admittedly, there are laws which may be not adaptable to society and the masses, depending on their applications with respect to time and location. For example, throughout the history in India, the government altered outdated laws so that it allowed polygamy of Muslims while meantime punish people of other religions who have multiple marriages. Laws should be modified, according to the need for the adaptation to social changes and public attitude, which guarantee the interests of very majority and harmony among differences. If Indians did not confer the privilege of multiple spouses to Muslims, they may otherwise bring about religious conflicts for the reason of not respecting Muslim culture or belief. In reality, various modifications of laws exist and continue to exist, due to reasons like people’s opinion changing through a period of time, new emergence of circumstance of our life and the world we live, etc.

To sum up, due to lack of overall perspective and knowledge of individuals in society and that the undesired and detrimental consequences of recalcitration by people on the basis of personal comprehension of unjust laws, though there are existence of unjust or unfair laws that are no more, if ever, applicable, people can not simply resist to any law by their individual opinions, as long as the public welfare and interests are the ultimate objectives of the laws.
