TOPIC: ARGUMENT13 - The following appeared in a memo from the chief executive of a video game company.

"We have recently been offered the opportunity to buy the rights to produce a video game based on the soon-to-be-published children's book "Squirrel Power," by Peter Wood. While the cost of the rights is substantial and will place economic constraints on our company in the short-term, there are two reasons that the purchase of these rights will undoubtedly be a wise investment. First, Wood's last three books have been best sellers and the movie based on his first book was highly profitable. Second, the popular characters and story line in "Squirrel Power" will save us time in developing our video game, thereby reducing our costs."

The arguer claims that the company should by the rights of the soon-to-be-published children's book "Squirrel Power" whose writer is Peter Wood for produce a video game. And the arguer thought that it will be highly profitable to take this action. However, there are some flaws make the argument doubtful.

To begin with, there is no sufficient evidence to prove whether it is an opportunity to buy Peter Wood's rights to produce a video game. Thus, more clear information should be given by the arguer to show the soon-to-be-published children's book "Squirrel Power" so that to support its point of view. Otherwise, the arguer claims that Wood's last three books have been best sellers, even the movie based on it. Maybe this example can make sure that Wood's books is popular before, however, the argument has no mentioned that the sales status about Peter Wood's books now. Maybe the soon-to-be-published children's book "Squirrel Power" will be not making popularity today. Even if the book is still popular for children, however, there is no clearly evidence to show that the customers of the books will be satisfied with the video game. What’s more, the video game maybe too expensive for customers to buy. And we have no ideal whether the customers have a video game machine.

Furthermore, there is no sufficient evidence to prove that the story line in soon-to-be-published children's book "Squirrel Power" is really popular and would be accepted by the people. Moreover, even if the company used the book of "Squirrel Power" to be their original pattern of the video game, we still can not get a clear and sure consequent about whether the company can make profits from it. As the company, in my opinion, they should create a new and attractive video game by their own for the reason that common people would prefer a new product to the old one.

To sum up, the arguer fails substantiate its claim that to buy the rights of "Squirrel Power" and to use the story from it to be the original pattern of its video game would have made a great profits for the company, because the evidence cited in the argument does not lend a strong support to what the arguer maintains. To make the argument more convincing, the arguer would provide more convinced information to prove so. Therefore if the argument had included the given factors above, the argument can be more thorough and logically acceptable.
