提纲:1、社会化的的本质
2、现在不一定是失败的
3、目前的教育的确有问题,但这不单是教育界的问题
4、其实儿童社会化对于社会未来影响没有那么大
I partially concur with the statement that the way children are socialized would influence the future structure and paradigm of our society. However, I would not harness the word "determine" to delineate such function lying within children. As the statement claims, we have not acquired the proper method to raise children, but resort to history, the general trend of human society is evolving toward a more advanced level, from primitive clans to feudalism, then to democratic capitalism, with a likely form of communism in vision. By those experiences, I cannot totally agree with the statement about our educational approach.
By the word "socialize", the statement emphasizes not the comprehensive problem of education, but the fraction that cultivate them to blend in the society. The importance of such section is self-evident, yet is it so significant that could determine the destiny of society? Not really. There are many aspects of children education, mainly divided into two: knowledge and personality. Our schools and colleges usually are charged with the former while our social ambience and families are for the latter. The process of socialization belongs to somewhere between, which is a little delicate that entails both sides' effort. To be socialized, a child has to attain plenty of pragmatic knowledge to insure his or her survival from nature as well as from society. Then, the child's attitude, such as values, world view (or cosmology in a philosophical sense) and so forth, needs to be honed and cultivated so as to not present any menace, at least, to the society. In other words, no one should be taught to act like terrorists.
Once we are clear about the significance of the process socialization, we could manage to grope what is the best way, or the most appropriate, to conduct such education. The pessimistic view expressed by the statement suggests that we have not done enough in such area. Nevertheless, it is difficult for us to find some representative examples that illustrate the failure of socialization in history, except for those who grow in an isolated environment that even their parents have not been socialized apropos. So in such sense, the problem of socializing children does not really exist. Besides, the way of socializing anyone varies a lot from person to person that there cannot be a general design for such task. In different part of world, with varieties of geographical changes, economic variance and other shifting factors, it is impossible for people to develop any explicit scheme for raising and socializing children. Moreover, the educational method, hitherto, is in the process of groping, meaning that it is still being learning without a best solution. The universities in the US might be evaluated with the highest quality in education, while their approaches cannot be entitled with such laureate as the "best", even though they have a better performance in socializing students.
Admittedly, there are problems lying within our method of socializing children. But the level of seriousness is not the same from nation to nation. In China, the problem might be that schools' teaching is separated from social practice that those children are always living in an illusion world, while in those war zones such as Iraq, the problem of socialization could be urgent for another scenario, which is over-socialized children, engaging too frequently with social affairs leading to young suicide bombers. Those problems, nonetheless, are usually connected with the current social background that a pure change in educational field could hardly mean anything.
Last but not the least, we might overestimate the influence of socializing children on our future society. In ancient eras, there were not many educational facilities providing services to nurture children, but the history survived. Nowadays, with thousands of institutions focusing on how to raise children, conversely, there are problems, worries and qualms. It is truly an ironic picture. What we and the statement missed is that the adjustability of children as well as people. Indeed, those children might be raised by some old-fashioned or rigid approaches that benefit them little, but as time goes by, presenting with those sophisticated situations, everyone would change, would evolve, would become mature.
Simply put, socializing our children might be a vital task in thought of the future, but we should not put extra burdens on such mission. Plus, it is not a pure educational problem that can be solved within classrooms. Without the cooperation of the whole society, even the nature, the socialization would not satisfy everyone. But in another thought, it is not such a serious issue as we imagined, with the ability to adaptation, human still can develop and evolve. |
