Can only history determine an individual’s greatness?
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
Can the greatness of an individual only be recognized or valued in retrospect, by those who live after them, rather than his contemporaries?
This question remains a burning issue throughout history. I will give my consent to the speaker’s assertion that only history can determine an individual’s greatness. To bolster such viewpoint, there are some convincing reasons.
The chief reason why I fundamentally agree with the speaker lies in the common myopia of ordinary people. To recognize the achievement one may create, to foresee the victory one may score, to perceive the prodigy one may possess, it requires a unique clairvoyance which is quite rare in most ordinary people because they are, in many respects, blinded or circumscribed by the current situation. The best example is the renowned U.S president Abraham Lincoln who, during the American Civil War, was severely cursed by the South for his cruel intention to abolish the slavery and bitterly berated by the North for his inefficiency and stupidity in the war. Even his colleagues disdained his work and nicknamed him “the Ape”.
But history proved Lincoln’s immortality and his irreplaceable contribution to this country. After the horrible assassination, people, whether in South or North, realized they lost a strong leader——a leader truly changed the course of this nation. Today’s prosperity of the United States should largely attribute to Lincoln’s remarkable effort and broad vision in the war. From this, we can see that history could perfectly mirror the greatness of the individuals.
The second reason for my agreement is based on the evidences in the field of scientific research. As we all know, to test the validity of an experiment calls for a long period of time. Some theories may sound like strange thinking while hundreds years later could be indestructible truth. The famous renaissance astronomer Copernicus who strongly upheld the heliocentric theory in the Dark Age was sentenced to be burnt for the weirdness of his theory which claimed the sun as the center of the universe rather than the Earth. In the Dark Age, such theory was unthinkable because it broke the rule of the religious world. But modern science has testified the reality of Copernicus’s theory and admitted his theory noticeably developed the modern astronomy. Thus, we come to the conclusion that in scientific research, greatness of an individual must be tested by time and patience.
In sum, it is clear that only history qualifies to determine how great one can be. The shortsightedness of the multitude and restriction in scientific research can be big obstacles in realizing the achievement one may bring to this world. Therefore, the contemporaries fail to be the right witnesses and history prevails.
