Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

In order to solve the problems in the present and future, it is necessary to understand the past.


It is an established historic point of view which goes " a man who learns from the past can make wise choices at present and in the future." I am personally a big fan of the quote, from both all the stories that I heard and my past experiences I have been through. I believe that a man who not only knows, but totally understands and learns from yesterday is the one who can take the best advantage of the opportunities today and generate the brightest possible answers when faced with problems of tomorrow.

I have several reasons for making that argument. Firstly, it is often the case that we make exactly the same mistake as one we had made in the past. By understanding it, we are more likely to avoid it and make progress in this regard. Just imagine: If everyone can learn from their past wrong-doings and make the best of them to equip themselves for the challenges that lie ahead, how successful we can be today and tomorrow?

There is an ancient Chinese proverb, it goes like"one is never too old to correct his past wrong doings and start over again", and there are millions of examples to throw light upon this theory. Say, through my career as a full-time student for more than 15 years, I have taken millions of examinations, no matter how big or small they were. I would always encounter the same type of Math problems once in a while on different exams, however under this circumstance, whether you would solve them and achieved a decent score on the exam does not depend on your competence, or even intellectual abilities; on the contrary, it is whether you could learn from your past mistakes and do it right the next time that matters. This also provides an answer to why everybody's saying " practice makes perfect". It is because through practice we can spot the mistakes in the past, understand our weaknesses and conquer them upon today or tomorrow's reappearance.

In addition, not only our own past experiences can be a helpful source from which we can make more informed and tentative decisions present and future, but learning from others can serve the same purpose. This is the very reason why we were given history lessons when at school and probably through these courses, we were educated to understand historic phenomenon and learn from them. As we all know that in history, a dynasty is doomed to disappear in the ash of time and for always thought less of, if ,say, bribery was prevailing and people were suffering. This teaches contemporary leaders from all walks of life to think twice in governing their citizens or employees, promoting productivity and economic efficiency. More importantly, they shall strive to win hearts and give back. These are
lessons valuable for today's and tomorrow's decision maker which can only be learnt via analysis and understanding of the past.

We don't have to be historians, but from my understanding of this issue, I would claim that we all should learn from history in order to avoid the recurrence of those undesirables, while seek to utilize the credits of history to guide us ahead to we are moving, today and tomorrow.
