Too much emphasis has been placed on the need for students to challenge the assertions of others so that they can learn to criticize the views of others. In fact, the ability to compromise and work with others-that is, the ability to achieve social harmony-should be a major goal in every school.
Syllabus: disagree. 应该有质疑的精神,同时也要学会work with others.

The issue above-whether should we encourage students to challenge other’s assertion, or cultivate their ability to compromise and work with others- in character is one about the necessity of the spirit of inquiry. As a matter of fact, the spirit of inquiry is part and parcel to us to such an extent that it is indispensable not only for the progress of an individual but also for the society.
The spirit of inquiry, that is, to challenge the idea or view of others, is an important kind of quality that an individual, especially a scientist should have, because its advantages on adding our knowledge and improving our level of knowing the world. As is so often pointed out, we could learn more through those whose views different with ours. But have you ever think of the reason? It might be that people equipped with the spirit of inquiry would strongly inquire the validity of the different views of others, and then would try his/her best to search the causes. The process-from the start of inquiry to finding out the causes-would greatly expand our scope of knowledge if the result is that the view of others is right. However, we would also benefit a lot if we find the flaws with others, because the process of inquiry is one of improving our knowing of the subject, and your knowledge is added since you have the ability to prove others are wrong, right? Indisputably, it might be this spirit that equipped man to find discoveries one after another, and thus advance our society.
Contrary to the spirit of inquiry, to compromise whenever a different view or idea emerges is so dangerous that no progress might be achieved. Because the fact that you are always preparing to accept others’ views without inquiring the validity of them would prevent you from finding the truth: which one is right, or both are right. And as a result, your level of knowledge would not exceed that of others, not to mention the progress which might to be achieved through inquiry, since you fall short of the impetus which might inspire you to discover the truth, which, in turn, would motivate you forward.
Admittedly, we should have the ability to learn to work with others. In such an era filled with numerous information and ever-growing knowledge, it might be difficult for one to accomplish some task, which might be possible ago. The construction of a ship, for example, is complex to such an extent that numerous works of various kinds are required. And every individual is crucial to the accomplishment of the task, since the whole is composed of the work done by every individual. In such cases, the ability to work with others is necessary especially for the leader in order to hold people together to achieve the goal. But to work with others does not mean to compromise with others, because there are method of various kinds you could take apart from compromise.
In sum, much emphasis should be paid on the cultivation of the spirit of inquiry for students because of the great advantage above it has and benefit students might get, and resolutely object to the behavior of compromising, which, however, does not have the same meaning of learning with others. After all, making progress is our final goal no matter what conflict or unhappy might cause.(564) |
