071005 the purpose of television is to educate not entertain.
I don't support the idea the purpose of television is to educate but to entertain, because TV, the most widely used mass media in the recent few decades, provides the majority of ordinary citizens not only amusement but knowledge.
Obviously, watching TV series and programs is one of the most popular methods to kill time and have fun. As the pace of society rapidly increasing, people, usually bound to a tiring and tedious job, are more and more likely to relax themselves at home rather than go outside, which makes TV shows a perfect pastime. The main TV networks therefore produce a series of shows and programs such as American Idol, the most heated television reality competition broadcasted by FOX, to attract the potential audiences. Those shows are usually presented weekly or daily, keeping thousands of fans busy chasing the newest episode, and creating lots of public topics as well as new TV stars and singers. At this point, as people, who have a TV set and cable, are generally entertained and satisfied, the long and leisure time consume alongside.
Apart from the fun TV brings us, today, acquiring knowledge and information on TV tends to be accepted by more and more people, especially teens and students. Thanks to the direct way of providing information and the combination of image and sound, TV is capable of transporting knowledge from almost every subject including science, social events, economy, art, etc. One of the typical examples is Discover Channel, a channel provides primarily documentary programming focused on popular science, technology and history. Via incredible images and vivid descriptions, the programs presented by Discovery Channel are widely watched throughout the world, enlarging the horizon of their audiences. As a result, the educational purpose of TV is achieved, through a way that is widely welcomed.
In short, while the TV can be seen as necessary for entertainment purpose, it is with certain educational value. To be more exact, both the purposes are somehow required by TV programmers, to whom controlling the mass media is not only leverage to speak public, but responsibility to educate and please vast people. |
