问个有关在美国转学的问题

请教各位达人帮帮忙。
我有个朋友，女生，现在美国读统计（statistic）的phd第二年。
她现在的大学综排十几名，专业排名30多，她以后的目标是能留在美国做research，不想进industry，现在的学校专业不够强，往年的phd毕业生即使很牛的也都只能到比较差的学校读post doc之类的，research前景不太乐观。
她现在想今年fall再申请一下几个比较牛的学校，主要目标是Stanford，UCB，UCLA（她本人很喜欢加州），她说大四申请的时候前三年GPA不算高，这两年感觉还是做了一些东西的，应该能给申请加点筹码。帮忙来问问，因为统计专业申请的时候基本上不存在套词的概念，如果现在申请的话，能有多大的把握。
另外她还有几个可能比较麻烦的问题，一个是她这学期课程还蛮重的，还需要准备GRE subject的数学，然后明年一月份是qualify exam，也是需要花蛮多时间的，申请上可能没法准备的太充分。另外一个是推荐信的问题，她的老板很Nice，但是这种事情总归不好说，要怎么和老板和谐一点交流一下，万一没申请到，不会影响到后面几年。
所以请教各位达人，一个是怎么和现在老板说，还一个是申请有多大把握，还需要准备点啥，另外一个那些牛校毕业后以后的前景，主要是留在美国大学做faculty这方面。

why does she have to GRE subject test?

w/o strong recommendations, it's really hard to get in top schools, not to mention she's a transfer....

i guess she has to be honest with her advisor... otherwise, i dont think she has a chance...
like if asked why does she want to transfer?

Totally agreed. There are only few Stat programs requiring GRE Math subjects. Unless she really wants to go to that particular school, she does not have to take the test.

I think letters of recommendation (LOR) will be a big problem. Since this is her second year, admission committee expects to see LOR from her current department.
