套来的一点哥大应数和统计的消息，希望对大家有点用~

前一阵比较纠结于到底投哥大的statistics还是applied math，主要不清楚两边到底各录多少人，于是就找哥大网站上的学生的邮箱，随便发了两封信去问了问，人家还真的回复了，粘在下面，对统计或者应数有兴趣筒子们可以自己看着玩（希望贴人家的回信不会冒犯人家，阿弥陀佛）~~
Letter one：
Joe,
I'm not exactly sure how many students were admitted for the MS
program in applied math. My guess is around 10. It's definitely a
smaller department than statistics. I'm not sure which program -
applied math or statistics - has higher standards of admission. It
doesn't hurt to apply to both.
Your GPA and GRE scores are very good but I know that there are many
other factors considered with admission. I have no idea what the
averages are for the department. I don't think that there is a minimum
GPA or GRE score.
You might consider writing Montserrat, mf2157@columbia.edu, who is a
student coordinator in our department. She'll at least be able to
point you to a person who knows the answers to these questions.

Letter two：
你好，
哥大的应用数学项目很小，09fall大约2个中国人，10fall大概5个。哥大统计系招的人很多，申请难度不大。应用数学人虽少，不过申请难度也不会很大。
看你的兴趣了。这里的AM老师，基本是搞大气、海洋一类的，教的东西离找工作还是有一定距离的。

本来我想申应数的，现在看看还是统计好搞一些吧~~发点资料给大家，希望攒攒rp，这两天找教授签推荐信各种不顺……

我问一下lz的第二封信：应数的老师搞大气海洋一类？不是应该有一个专门的department，专业下面可能是atmospheric science，就是搞大气海洋一类的吗？那些老师也分属应用数学系？

对的，哥大的应数是在它的The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science这个学院里，本身就是一个综合性的偏工程类的学院，这里面很多搞应数的老师都是joint professor，同时隶属两个department~~ 其实应数的方向还是很多的，大气海洋里面很多要用到小波分析，数学模型之类的东西还是和应数有相关性的~

AM,AP和MSE混在一个系里,AM不算是最小的PROGRAM,当然不能和统计比,教授做的东西也是五花八门的,应数的范围本来就很难定义,另外AM出来的也有不少不做学术的
