The lecture casts several doubts on thestatement in the reading that the ban of smoking produces negative impact onpersonal rights, business. The professor argues by several points.
First, the professor argues that smokingis, obviously, harmful for non-smokers, thus ignores their personal rights, while the reading only places emphasis on that smoking bans influence smokers’personal rights. The smokers are allowed to smoke, as long as they do notaffect others.
Second, the professor points out that smokingbans indeed help smokers quit smoking, which smokers are only addicted to.
Third, contrast to the view in the readingthat smoking bans only exert negative impact on business, the lecture states,in another aspect, that the bars and restaurants seem to trend to attract morenon-smokers, who otherwise will stay at home to avoid the secondhand smoke.
Finally, the professor emphasizes thedangers of smoking on health, which is simply regarded as nothing in thereading. The professor argues that smoking leads to not only cancer, but alsoheart attacks. Actually, smokers have 40percents more of the risks to haveheart attacks.
Therefore, compared with the content inreading that smoking bans is unreasonable, the lecture is in favor of the bans.
Live in a small town or a big city?
Recently, there is a strange phenomenonthat a growing number of people in big city trend to move to small town, whilethe rural people enjoy moving to big city. No one may deny that a small townenjoys a peaceful, quiet environment, and the people there are so pure thatthey help each other not only for benefits. However, I am firmly convinced thata big city is better than a small town, due to the convenient access totremendous information, transportation, and more opportunities in job markets.
First, under no circumstance can we ignorethe importance of convenient, effective and fast access to information in a bigcity. Along with the development of economy, human beings have entered into theinformationization society, in which people can obtain useful information frominternet, television, cell phone, just name a few. For example, I went to asmall town last August, as a volunteer to teach children. The signals were tooweak there that I was not able to call my friends when I was on a mountainalone, which made me fell extremely scared. And when we gave speech in theschool, the lack of screen player led to the speech without video and PPT,which influenced the teaching quality. Therefore, people who have a betteraccess to gaining information enjoy advantages in education, daily life, andeven safety.
Second, the advanced transportation, like privatecars, subways, maglev, enables people to live more comfortably in a big city, while the overwhelming number of people in a small town seem to trend to goeverywhere by a dirty, small public bus. For example, now I live in Shanghai, I spend onehour to school by subway, otherwise it will take two and half hours by bus. Andlast week, my family went to Hangzhouby maglev, by which it only took twenty minutes. For sake of a fast, comfortable, modern transportation way, a big city is a perfect choice.
Finally, a big city offers a morecompetitive, energetic economical environment, which promotes people to learnmore and enjoy a better position in the job markets.
Thus, as what has been discussed above, wemay now safely draw the conclusion that compared with the conditions in a smalltown, a big city enjoys advantages in convenience in gaining information, transportation, and in providing with better job vocations. However, peoplestill should avoid some disadvantages, like profits motivated behaviors ordishonest. |
