The lecture completely refutes the passage as the professor states that it is the predation rather than the pollution that results in the decrease of the populations of the sea otters.

To begin with, contrary to the belief in the passage that it is the pollution that causes the death of the sea otters, the professor argues that the theory shown in the passage is weaken by the fact that no dead otter has been washed up and found by people. In fact, the predators killed the otters and ate them at once. So, people never see the dead otters washing up by the water.

Besides, the professor also refutes the theory in the passage that the orca prefer to hunt prey such as whales, which is larger than sea otters by indicating that because of human hunting , the numbers of the whales has been declined and makes the orca hunt other small sea mammals such as sea otters as their food. Therefore, populations of sea otters decline in the result of orca’s hunting.

In addition, the professor provides a totally different explanation to the uneven pattern of otter decline. She claims that at some locations which the orca could access, the otter populations declined greatly, while at the other location which is rocky and shallow, the populations of the sea otters remained stable as the orca could not enter these places because of its size. While in the passage, the writer indicates that it is the pollution, ocean currents or other environment factors that have created the uneven concentrations of otter populations along the coast.

Young people should try several different jobs before they take a long term career.


In the assertion, the writer states that before the young people take a long term career, they should try several different jobs. People may have different ideas on the assertion according to their various experiences. As far as I am concerned, I strongly agree with the speaker.

There is no denying that interest plays an important role in one's career. When choosing a long term career, people should choose a career which they are really interested in because it is more likely for them to do a good job and become successful in a field they are interested in. However, sometimes it is not easy for people to find out what their real interest is. Trying several different jobs can serve as an effective way for people to find out what kind of job do they really interested in and set up the goal of their long term career. Take our English teacher for instance, before being a teacher at college, he was an accountant and before he worked as an accountant, he was a news paper reporter. He tells us it does take some time for him to find his real interest and he tried several kinds of jobs when he was young. Finally, he finds his real interest is to be a teacher and now he is enjoying his job very much because he has chosen being an educator as his long term career. Therefore, in order to choose the right field of their long term career, the young people should try several jobs before they take a long term career.


On the other hand, trying several different jobs can also bring the young people with much experience, which they really need when they enter the society. By doing different jobs, the young people will have the chance to get knowledge about different jobs and get in touch with different kinds of people in different fields. This can help the young people know more about the society and improve their abilities. They can benefit from their rich experience by learning how to communicate with others effectively, how to cooperate with others in a team work and so on. These abilities and experience can prepare them well for their future career. For example, when Li Jiacheng, one of the most successful Chinese businessmen in the world, was young, he did several jobs such as salesman, shopkeeper and so on. When he talks about his later succeed in his long term career as a businessman, he thinks the experience he gained through his several early jobs contributes a lot in his successful business career. In a word, we can come to the conclusion that trying several different jobs can bring the young people with much experience which can help them a lot in their long term career.

In sum, as discussed above, young people should try several different jobs before they take a long term career because by trying several different jobs, the young people can choose the right field of their long term career and the experience they get in the trying can prepare them well for their long term career in the future.

Admittedly, creativity is very important in solving problems in daily life. For example, Without his creativity, how can Einstein set up the theory of relativity? Besides, Newton would never make the finding of gravity if he lacked the creativity to solve the problems he met. However, when it comes to looking for the best solution to a problem, only being creativity is obviously not enough. Planning carefully also plays an important role in searching for the best solution to a problem in our life.(很好的具体事例支持）.

On one hand, there is no denying that a careful plan is very important when people want to find the best solution to a problem in daily life. Take the Beijing Olympic games, for instance(for example), during the progress of preparing for the games, the Chinese people met a lots(lot) of problems such as how to ensure the safety of the Olympic games, how to make the transportation in Beijing work more efficiently during the games and so on. Without a careful plan, how can the Chinese people succeed in solving these problems in the best ways and how can the Beijing Olympic games becomes one of the most successful Olympic games in the history(in history;in the history of)? （非常好的事例展开）

On the other hand, planning carefully can ensure people to consider all the possible solutions to a problem. Only after considering all the possible solutions can people choose the best solutions to a problem.(句式变换很好) For example, in order to find the best material to make a bulb, Edison tried about thousands of times when choosing the material and he was successful in the end. Without a carful plan of the thousands of experiments, how could he succeed in finding the best material he wanted and invented the bulb, which brings light to all the human beings. In sum, although creativity is very important in solving problems in daily life, we should not ignore the importance of a careful plan. As discussed above, both being creative and planning carefully help people come up with the best solution to a problem.

In the assertion, the speaker states that a job with more vacation time but a low salary is better than the one with a high salary but less vacation. As far as I am concerned, I disagree with the speaker.

Admittedly, vacation is very important in our daily life because people can relax themselves well and gain a lot of happiness when they are on vacation. However, when it comes to a good job, it is not sensible for the speaker to claims that vacation is much important than salary because different people may have different definitions of a good job.

There is no denying that for many people in our society, salary is the first thing they concern about when they are looking for a good job. As we all know, the primary aim of working is to get some money and people earn their living by having a job and finishing their work. The more money they get from their job, the more luxurious car they can have, the higher quality of education they can receive and the better house they can live in. Therefore, in many people's eyes, high salary is the most important thing of a good job. It is not always the case that the vacation is much important than the salary for a good job in people's mind.

On the other hand, besides the salary and vacation, there are lots of things which are very important for a good job. For example, many people consider the future development of a job as the most important thing when they look for a good job, while others care much more about the abilities they can gain in a good job, which can prepare them much better for their future long term career.


In sum, as discussed above, it is unreasonable to say that a job with more vacation time but a low salary is better than the one with a high salary but less vacation because people have different opinions on what is a good job and actually, both the vacation and salary play an important role in a good job.

Besides, the professor claims that the decline in the literature reading does not mean that there is also a decline in the level of culture. The lecture completely refutes the passage because the professor claims that the evidences shown in the passage are unconvincing.

To begin with, the writer states in the passage that the subject in the professionally painting owned by a member of Austen family is Austen because of the fact that the Austen family itself has endorsed the claim that Austen is the girl in the portrait. While the professor refutes the writer's opinion by indicating that the evidence provided in the passage is questionable. In fact, the portrait of Austen was used as an edition of letter several years after Austen's death and the
family has not seen Austen at all.


Besides, contrary to the belief in the passage that the teenage girl in the portrait is Austen according to the similarity of the portrait with Cassandra's sketch, the professor points out that it is highly possible that the girl in the portrait is one of Austen's relative as there were several teenage girls in Austen family when the portrait was painted.


In addition, the professor also claims that we cannot come to the conclusion that the subject in the portrait is Austen merely on the fact that the style of the painting is like the style of Ozias Humphrey.
