The lecture completely refutes the passage because the professor thinks the theories showed in the passage are not convincing.

To begin with, contrary to the belief in the passage that the Chaco structures were purely residential, the professor states that the function of the buildings cannot be housing. He points out that although the outside of the buildings looks like the later “apartment buildings” at Taos, New Mexico, the inside of the buildings casts doubt on the view in the passage. If hundreds of people lived in the buildings, there should be many fireplaces in the buildings. However, few fireplaces have been found inside the Chaco structures. Moreover, the buildings cannot house hundreds of people because there are not enough rooms in them.

Besides, the passage asserts that the settlements used the buildings for storing grain maize, while the professor refutes it by stating that the theory in the passage that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies is unsupported by evidences. It is highly possible that the buildings are not for storing food supplies because no trace of grain maize or grain maize containers is found in the excavation of the great house. Therefore, the argument that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies is doubtful.

In addition, the professor indicates that we cannot come to the conclusion that the houses were used as ceremonial centers merely on the fact that a large number of broken pots are found in the excavations of the mound. In fact, besides broken pots, many other materials such as building materials and construction tools were found there. According to the discovery of these materials, the professor concludes that the buildings might be used for storing construction trash rather than food supplies and the broken pots might be left by the constructers in the past.

In the statement, the speaker asserts that increasing the teachers' salaries is the best way to improve the quality of education in a country. People may have different ideas on the assertion according to their various experiences. As far as I am concerned, I disagree with the speaker because the best way to improve the quality of education in a country is to make improvement in students' learning ability and teachers' ability of teaching at the same time.

Admittedly, increasing the teachers' salaries can help to improve the quality of education in a country. On one hand, higher salaries can attract more excellent teachers from all around the world to work in the country. These excellent teachers can bring advanced projects as well as new ways of teaching to the schools in the country and benefit the students there a lot, which can effectively improve the quality of education in a country. On another hand, the teachers will work more hard if their salaries are increased because everyone pursuits of wealth in their daily life. However, increasing the teachers' salaries is not the best way to improve the quality of education in a country because there are many other factors which is much more important than the salaries of the teachers. For example, the students' learning ability and teachers' ability of teaching plays a much more important role in the quality of education in a country than the salaries of the teachers.

There is no denying that the students' learning ability is very important in our education. The better a student know how to learn, the more useful knowledge he can get from the education he is receiving. For example, after receiving the same education in the class, the students who know how to study effectively do a much better job in academy than the others in my class.  Good students should know how to take notes in the class and how to learn by themselves after the class independently. Experience tells us that a student's learning ability plays an important role in the quality of his study. Only when the qualities of the individual students’ study have been improved can the improvement of the quality of education in a country become true.  The human society should ensure the students have mastered a good ability of studying if human beings want their knowledge to be passed down well from one generation to another. Therefore, we should make improvement in the students' learning ability in order to improve the quality of education in a country.

Another important role of education is the teachers because they are the one who give the education. In order to improve the quality of education in a country, we should also improve the teachers' ability of teaching as well. As we all know, the teachers’ ability of teaching has a great influence on the quality of education. Take the classes in our school, for instance, a good teacher who can teach well is able to attract the attention of the students by offering a lively class. In this class, the students are interested in what they are learning and are able to gain knowledge effectively. However, a teacher without a good teaching ability may make the students lose their interest in the topic they are studying and leads to a low efficiency in the education. The country should give the teacher trainings to improve their performance in the class and improve their quality of teaching in the class, which contributes a lot in the quality of education in a country. Besides, teachers should be encouraged to work part time in the field they major in the society and keep up with the development of the newest technology. This can help the teachers be able to bring the fresh idea to the class and improve the quality of their teaching. In a word, as teaching plays an important part in the quality of education in a country, we should improve the teachers' teaching ability in order to improve the quality of education in a country.

In sum, the best way to improve the quality of education in a country is to make improvement in the students' learning ability and teachers' ability of teaching at the same time because it is both the performances of students and the teachers that decide the quality of education in a country.

Admittedly, increasing the teachers' salaries can help to improve the quality of education (to a certain degree). On one hand, higher salaries can attract more excellent foreign teachers with advanced projects and new pedagogies to improve the quality of education in a country. On the other hand, the teachers will work more hard for their wealth increases with their salaries. However, there are many other factors are more important than the salaries of the teachers.
Firstly,students' learning ability is very important. The better a student know how to learn, the more he can get from the education. In the assertion, the speaker claims that it is being creative, rather than planning carefully that helps people come up with the best solution to a problem. People may have various opinions about the statement according to their different experiences. As far as I am concerned, I disagree with the speaker because the speaker ignores the importance of a careful plan in solving a problem.

Admittedly, creativity is very important in solving problems in daily life. Without his creativity, how can Einstein set up the theory of relativity? Besides, Newton would never make the finding of gravity if he lacked the creativity to solve the problems he met. However, when it comes to looking for the best solution to a problem, only being creativity is obviously not enough. Planning carefully also plays an important role in searching for the best solution to a problem in our life.

On one hand, there is no denying that a careful plan is very important when people want to find the best solution to a problem in daily life. Experience tells us that people need some time to make a plan, especially a careful plan when they want to solve the problems they face in the best way. Take the Beijing Olympic games, for instance, during the progress of preparing for the games, the Chinese people met a lots of problems such as how to ensure the safety of the Olympic games, how to make the transportation in Beijing work more efficiently during the games and so on. Without a careful plan, how can the Chinese people succeed in solving these problems in the best ways and how can the Beijing Olympic games becomes one of the most successful Olympic games in the history?

In the lecture, the professor completely refutes the points in the passage as the following reasons.

To begin with, the professor points out that the consumers in America do care about the certifications offered by the international organization to the companies and the ecocertification label will catch the consumers' attention while in the passage, the writers states that in general,  the consumers in America do not trust in advertising claims.

Besides, contrary to the belief in the passage that ecocertified wood will not be competitive in the market because of their higher prices, the professor indicates that the higher price will not prevent the consumers from choosing the products of the wood companies who produce ecocertified products. He points out that the price of the product has little influence on the decisions made by the consumers when the difference between the prices of the two products is small. On the other hand, the value of protecting environment will make the consumers choose the ecocertified wood.

In addition, the professor refutes the view in the passage that pursuing certification will not make sense for American companies by claiming that if the American companies do not keep up with the development in the rest of the world, the American companies will be slow in capturing consumers and the foreign companies will soon crowd in America.

The lecture completely refutes the views in the passage as the professor thinks the memoir written by Chevalier is reliable.


To begin with, contrary to the belief in the passage that Chevalier is not rich because he borrowed money from a Swiss merchant, the professor claims that Chevalier owned much wealth in Switzerland. In fact, Chevalier borrowed money from a Swiss merchant just because it needed some time for him to turn some of his property into money while the activities on parties and gambling always needed a huge amount of money in a short time.


Besides, the professor also refutes the critics' skepticism about the accuracy of the conversations that Chevalier recorded in his memoir by indicating that Chevalier had recorded the conversation accurately after he and Voltaire conversed every night. The professor points out that with the help of the notes taken down in the past, Chevalier was able to compose his memoir accurately although it is usually hard for people to remember the conversations years ago accurately.


In addition, the critics mentioned in the passage holds the view that Chevalier got free from the jail because the jailers were bribed by his politically well-connected friends. While in the lecture, the professor states that Chevalier did escape from the jail by himself because many prisons whose friends are much more powerful than those of Chevalier's  were not freed from the prison at that time. Furthermore, the fact that people had to repair the ceiling of the jail also helps to prove that Chevalier escaped from the hole he made in the ceiling and got out of the jail.
