TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
提纲:
①
历史把重点放在了伟人身上,忽视了一群人的力量;
②
历史上的大事件是由一群人来完成的;
③
把重点放在某些有代表性的人身上有助于人们了解历史。
In the records of history, what we memorize profoundly are the stories about the glorious deeds of a few individuals. However, these famous individuals would have been unable to achieve those thing can change the world without the support and the active participation of people who fought for the same target.
The study of history pay much attention on a few individuals and some historians hold the view that history is under the impact of the highly influential individuals, since a lot of historical events are tied directly to their own individual decisions. Franklin D. Roosevelt, being the American president for continuous four terms, carried THE NEW DEAL in 1933 when the whole world is under the Great Depression and greatly alleviated the economic crisis that the Great Depression brought about and the social conflict. What's more, after the Second World War, he played an influential role, especially in the Yalta Conference and the foundation of the UN, in the constitution of the world’s new system. The efforts of Franklin D. Roosevelt can never be undermined and he is regarded as one of the greatest presidents in the American history. However, without the common Americans supporting his policy and the soldiers sacrificing themselves on the battle field, Franklin D. Roosevelt wouldn't ensure his name written in the history book. Great things are accomplished by large qualities of people and those people, often seen as "gallant soldiers" in battles recorded in history books, who are behind the scenes never find any mention in history.
The famous people deserve the memorized in history for their great particularity such as the lead ship. But the most significant events or projects in history were made possible by group of people and it is unfair to just pay attention on the famous individuals. The Great Wall, started building in 214 BC, is regarded as the wonder in the architectural history. Almost 300 thousand people participated in this huge project and thousands upon thousands of people died, leading their offspring an indestructible barrier to defend the country. Brick by brick, people together with people, achieve such a unrivaled project. The efforts of one person are not sufficient to arouse a shift in the world, but the accumulating efforts of all the members of groups that arouse a revolution. Karl Marx argued that history was determined by the massive social forces at play in "class struggles", not by the individuals by whom those forces are played out.
Sometimes, it is reasonable to pay the emphasis on the famous individuals, however, people should not spill too much ink on them. During the Renaissance, the revival of art and literature under the influence of classical models in the 14th—16th centuries, many philosophers and painters took part in it and caused the renaissance. Yet, as of today, only Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael are world renowned in respect that they represent the painters during that period. Thus, appropriate emphasis on the individuals is convenient for people to remember the history, but if one wants to study the history further, he should have a detailed research.
Lots of famous individuals are widely mentioned in the history account of their unique charisma. Whereas, it is the efforts of groups of people that made the difference and they should not be forgotten.
