Basic science, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geography and biology, describes the most basic objects, forces, relations between them and laws governing them. Many people superficially deem that learn(learning) basic science is (a)waste of time and also is useless since it’s not directly related to the practical applications. However, basic science is the key premise of other fields and also instructive to our daily life.
To begin with, it's not waste of time to learn basic science since it's the key premise to the knowledge of other fields. Therefore, it's impossible to learn other knowledge without learning several sub disciplines of basic science. For instance, for a student of science and engineering, the prerequisite courses are mathematics, physics and chemistry. While for a student of liberal arts, the compulsory course is mathematics at least. {Although, the students are not need to learn completely all the knowledge of basic science, they do have to learn some basic knowledge of it, otherwise, it's no way for them to concentrate on their own field.}这个结论似乎没有实质内容作支撑,显得像车轱辘话来回说。读完后我还是不是很信服为什么要通过去学不相关的基础课来更专注于自己研究的领域? Therefore, it's superficial for people with the thought that the university students should not take the basic science courses.
Furthermore, in spite of not directly related to the practical applications, basic science indirectly affects them. It can be simply admitted that all the applications somewhat have relation to basic science. For example, car, one of the most important modern life staples(我第一次见这个用法 呵呵 google之 更多的是life’s staple), has much to do with basic science. We all know that the shape is related to mathematics, the motion is related to physics, the impetus is related to chemistry, the Global Positioning System of it is related to astronomy and the way the seats are designed is related to biology. In addition, the car should take the topography into account, which is related to geography. Hence, all university students should learn the knowledge of fundamental science since all the applications are indirectly related to it.
Besides, basic science, especially geography and biology, is useful to the daily life of individual. For example, we can know which way of life can make us healthy. It's common sense that we should sleep early and get up early. And also for a chubby person who wants to lose weight can make his or her own plan according to his or her own metabolism which is knowledge of biology. On the other hand, geography can guide the travel. For instance, if we want to climb the Himalayas(这个例子很有道理啦,不过我觉得要解释常识的必要,就要用人们经常会干的事情,谁会经常去爬喜马拉山嘛,不如改成要去高原旅游,哈哈我较真了,没大碍的其实), where is lack of oxygen, it's better for us to take enough oxygen breathing apparatuses, otherwise we cannot imagine how terrible it would be. Thus, since basic science is instructive to our daily life, is there anyone can tell me why we should not learn the basic science courses.
Summarily, the influence of basic science is all around our daily life. Therefore, it's shallowly for someone who thinks it's not need to learn basic science knowledge. Instead, I deem that basic science should be defined as common sense, so I strongly agree that all university students should take basic science courses.
