ARGUMENT NO.7
The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."
From this argument we can conclude that the author believe if Ann Green elected as the mayoral would solve the environment problems in Clearview. But form all the details in this argument we can find this conclusion is not thoroughly well-reasoned.
First of all, we will find this argument tells about a mayoral election of Clearview. So we can’t judge whether a person can be a mayoral from only one aspect. Being a good mayoral requires a large amount of abilities, such as the ability of being a good leader, the ability of making decisions, and so on. The argument doesn’t mention the ability of Ann Green being a mayoral. So we couldn’t easily make the decision of electing Ann Green as the mayoral, for she is a member of the Good Earth Coalition and her election may be good to the environment of Clearview.
Even though Ann Green has the ability of being a mayoral, we also can’t make sure she really can solve the environment problems in Clearview. The argument believes Ann Green who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition will do something to solve the environment if being elected as the mayoral. But being the member of the Good Earth Coalition just shows she is a person who stands for protecting the environment. As a result of this we can’t roughly decide Ann Green really knows how to solve the environment problems in Clearview.
Then, this argument mentions the current members like Frank Braun are not protecting our environment and the reason is during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. However, we can’t conclude Frank Braun isn’t protecting the environment by this reason. The income of a government mainly hails from the tax gathering from the companies in the state. So the number of factories increasing doesn’t stand for the mayoral doesn’t protect the environment. Besides, the new built factories can bring benefits to Clearview, such as providing more work chances to the citizen.
Last but not the least, protecting environment isn’t such an easy thing and improving the quality of the environment needs a long time. Though air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses, we can’t simply conclude Frank Braun has done nothing to protect the environment. May be he has already done something, but all the actions need a long time take into effect.
To sum up, from all the statement in the foregoing we can’t totally know whether Ann Green could be more suitable than Frank Braun being the mayoral of Clearview. Electing a mayoral requires takes many aspects into consideration, as a result of this we can’t judge who is more suitable by the aspect of protecting environment. |
