写的有点多了,也写了好久...TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

In this argument, the arguerconcludes that in the next mayoral election, the residents of Clearview shouldvote for Ann Green, member of the Good Earth Coalition, instead of the memberof the Clearview town council, Frank Braun. To support the conclusion, thearguer points out that the current members are not protecting the environment. The arguer further proves this conclusion by pointing out that during pastyears number of factories and level of air pollution have increased; what'smore, patients with respiratory illness have accrued too. But, in fact, thisargument is unconvincing for several critical flaws.
At the beginning of the argument, the arguer claimsthat the residents should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good EarthCoalition, for the presupposition that she can lead the government to makeefforts to protect the local environment. That is to say, her potentialopponent, Frank Braun, who is a member of the Clearview town council, is notable to lead the government to prevent the town from being polluted by pointingout that the current members are not protecting the local environment. In thestatement, the arguer fails to provide evidence that Ann Green isprofessionalized or have any possible policies on protecting the environment. It does not mean that she is concerning about the local environment by solelyknowing she is a member of Good Earth Coalition, for we are not informed aboutthe actual function and feature of the coalition. On the other hand, it isunwarranted that Frank Braun is not protecting the ambient, there's no evidentthat Frank is in charge of the environment administration, nor he has the authorityin that.
Secondly, the arguer ignores several factors thatmight undermine the argument. The arguer claims that during the past year thenumber of factories in town has doubled with the assumption of the currentmembers of government are not protecting the environment. There's no evidentthat the factories are polluting the environment, the reason why the currentgovernors invest on factories is because those factories can generate a greatdeal of benefits of the local revenue, at the same time those are environmentfriendly factories which are using recycling water and less waste air arereleased. The arguer also attributes theincrease in air pollution to the neglect of current members, but fails toprovide any information on the original resource of the pollution air. It ispossible that the residents burns woods in order to cook or to use ascalefaction, or it is because of the increase of usage of automobile in town.
Furthermore, the arguer ignores the realcause of the accruement in patients with respiratory illnesses in hospital. Thearguer arbitrarily assumes that it is due to the increase in number of factoryand air pollution, but we are not informed about the actual cause of therespiratory illness. People in bad conditions may catch a cold and in possibleconsequence of getting worse, or it might because of the air pollution causedby the increase of car owning. Seasonal allergy to flowers may be the reason ofthe 25 percent more patients with respiratory illness in local hospital.
As it stands, the argument is not wellreasoned. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer would have to demonstratethat the member of the Good Earth Coalition, Ann Green is capable in bring goodenvironmental condition to town, and as well is qualified in running the dailyoperation of Clearview. Additionally, the arguer must provide evidence that theopponent of Ann Green, Frank Braun has the responsibility of protecting thelocal environment and fails to complete that task. |
