TOPIC: ARGUMENT186 - The following is a recommendation from the director of personnel to the president of Professional Printing Company.
"In a recent telephone survey of automobile factory workers, older employees were less likely to report that having a supervisor present increases their productivity. Among workers aged 18 to 29, 27 percent said that they are more productive in the presence of their immediate supervisor, compared to 12 percent for those aged 30 or over, and only 8 percent for those aged 50 or over. Clearly, if our printing company hires mainly older employees, we will increase productivity and save money because of the reduced need for supervisors."

The author recommended that the professional printing compant (ppc)should hire mainly older employees in order to increase productivity and save money based on a  recent telephone survey .However,The recommendation seems well-presented ,but not well- reasoned.
To begin with,the survey seems to be not statistically reliable.The author fails to offer enough evidence to support the fact that the number of respondents are significant statistically and that the respondents are representative of the all workers in the automobile factory.Lacking such evidence ,the survey's conslusion that merely a few older workers will work more efficiently with  the supervisor's presenting is unjustiable.
In addition, even if the survey is statistically reliable and the most older employees will be efficient without the supervisor, the author still can't convince me of his recommendation .On one hand , hiring mainly older employees doesn't necessarily means that the factory's productivity will be higher.It is possible that the young workers can produce more product than the older workers at the same time.For that matter,if the PPc hires mainly the older workers,the whole productivity of the factually will decrease as a result.On the other ,because the older workers have more experience ,they may require the boss to pay them more , and as a result, the factory maybe can't attain the purpose that saving more money.
Finally, it is not clear in this argument whether the conditions in the automobile factory are the same as the conditions in the Printing company.It is possible that the automobile factory need more workers with experience while the Printing company just need some young workers who don't seek the high payment.To support the argument, the author must carry on another statistically reliable survey,involving the productivity and the salary of the workers varying all age in PPC.
In sum, the statistically reliability of the survey and the survey's relevance to ppc are questionable.If the author can't provide more detail informations to substantiate his recommendation,I can't agree with his idea.
