In the busy and crowded world, we should not expect people to be polite to others.


From my perspective, though the world we live in becomes increasingly busy and crowed, yet it’s by no means a proper reason for us to accept the idea that we should not expect people to be polite to others, for civility cost nothing. So there are three points to support this view.

So positive a tradition of courtesy is that it shall never be abandoned in any situations, no matter in a quiet society where people live a peaceful and joyful life, or in a noisy and crowed world saturated with overwhelming loads of work as well as annoying traffic jams. Politeness, in a way, represents a high level of civilization. Human beings have experienced millions of years of evolution, from a time when foods and other daily necessities are in dramatic scarce to current days when large varieties of items are available, from a rude and unregulated period to present days which is marked by high developed culture. In a sense, our society has progressed to a point where good manners are well accepted custom. Thus, a busy and crowed world does not justify a retreat to the situation where courtesy is not to be appropriately anticipated.

Furthermore, the busier and more crowded the world becomes, the more politeness is in need. Only remain good manners, to some degree, can we embrace a better way to solve our problems in face of the congested and fast-tempo society. My own experience serves a proper example. As a lawyer in charge of several cases for a few companies, I spend a majority of my time in dealing with those affairs. Hardly can you imagine how busy I am. And it was a Monday morning when one of my client asked for a contract which is due to signed in the mid-afternoon, in the same breath, another client called for another document required approximately on the same day. Both of them are virtually urgent and tough. Needless to say, I have to assign these documents to my colleague Jack. After explaining the background of the task, I went on to my own part of work. However, Jack still came to me asking for what to do. I was in such a hurry that I really lost my temper and yelled at him. As a consequence, Jack just felt upset and refused to do that contract. Afterwards, I end up sacrificing my lunch and crammed for all the work by myself. As a matter of fact, I believe if I were being polite to him, things would go far more smoother.

The third reason I am ready to demonstrate is that the development of our society, although inevitably accompanied by being busy and crowded, is in dramatic need of politeness. By and large, the relationship between the development of our world and good manners are mutual. Good manners grow out of the long advancement of the society, while without being polite, no doubt that people will behave rude to each other, involving in quarrel and even conflicts, then the whole society will go wrong. For instance, if students take it for granted to act rudely to each other, taking advantage of their busy school work as well as the crowded campus as excuses, things will definitely go out of control. Moreover, if the traffic police, throwing their politeness over, treated the passersby in rough manner, I bet more quarrels would occur and the initial traffic problems would get worse. Hence, politeness is really a contributing ingredient of a civilized society which is yet busy and crowed.

Therefore, I completely hold the opinion that it is reasonable and necessary for people to remain being polite to others even in a busy and crowed world.
