TOPIC: ISSUE56 - "Governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future."


The speaker asserts that government should emphasize more on dealing with the immediate problems rather than trying to solve the possible problems of the future. It has merit from a normative view, and I agree with it insofar as the it is vital to solve the current problems to maintain the stability of society. However, the assertion is one - sided, from my point of view, it is also significant to focus on the anticipated problems of the future.


Admittedly, it is the government's responsibility to solve the current social problems such as the violence, poverty, sex discrimination, racial discrimination which threaten people's interests and the stability of nations directly. Imagining, if a society is filled with various contradiction and conflicts, people live in abyss of suffering, how could the government gain the support from its people? How could the research on issues of the future be carried on as the scientists are in dangers of hunger? How could the nation machines operate well everyday as no one could guarantee the stability of the society? Thus, the government had better to fix more attention on the immediate problems.
  

However, the importance of the action on solving the immediate problems does not indicate that we could overlook the anticipated future problems. Let bring our discussion here to a more present and practical context, it can be given concrete example; the sex ration imbalance, which gradually comes into the public view, might bring about a series of problems in the near future. And If we does not take effective measures right now, we will taste bitter fruits not far away. Another appropriate issue involves the various pollutions, that even put earth into danger, and it has become a common view that if we control the pollution at the beginning, people would not suffered from the polluted water, cancerigenic fish, etc.
  

In addition, it is also unfair that we serve our own interests at the expense of the future generations. Still taking the issue of pollution into discussion, we cannot deny that if we continue to over-exploit the resources, discharge sewage into the ocean without any process of purify, our offspring would have no source of clean water and live in a fear of exhausting of resources. On the other hand, the government should realize that research on some field for a solution of future problems may bring benefits for the current society. For instance, there are many scientists through the world carry on studies for finding alternative source of power, and these studies for the future mankind have already lead to some crucial change of the power systems, like the solar emerge, nuclear energy have been utilized yet.


In sum, from what I have discussed above, we can safely come to the conclusion that the government should devote energies to solve both the immediate problem and future problems, not only because ignorance of either problem would result in adverse consequences, but also because the effective action on these problems would benefits our offsprings.
