attending class:required or optional? It is widely acknowledged that college students should be required to attend every class because it is the only way for them to achieve high score in studying. In fact, however, it is highly possible that if students are given the right to choose their own curriculum, they can study more effectively and pursue their studies to the best of their abilities Firstly, different students have different interests or motivations in studying. For example, some students prefer to learn literature, if school forces them to select math, they will not only feel bored in math class, but also cannot concentrate on literature and think about some problems in art thoroughly. Some students want to develop their social skills to find good jobs after graduation, so they need to spend more time in students ‘union, which in turn leaves them less time to study. Generally speaking, if students can decide whether to attend classes or not, they can organize their time better. Additionally, some students find it difficult to concentrate in large lecture classes and find reading quietly a more effective way of studying. If a student can achieve more by reading in the library or meeting with a professor in office hours than attend every class, he should not be prevented from studying in the most effective way for him. Last but not the least, the most important measure of a college student’s academic progress is test. In the weeks before exam, student‘s need to arrange their own schedule becomes critical. For instance, a boy who is good at math but poor at English, has to take both tests at a time .If he is required to take every class in math, he may not have enough time to prepare for the English test, besides what the teacher teaches in math class is so easy for him that he do not need to spend that much time studying math. As a result, he may fail the English test. However, if he is free to skip the math class, he can have more time to study English and perform excellently at both tests.
In nutshell, although universities are responsible for making a curriculum to meet every student’s need, but every student’s requirement is different, it is impossible for universities to apply one single curriculum to all. In my view, the best way to solve this problem is to trust the students can make choices to their best interests, and to use test as the final criteria of academic excellence. 先粘上自己练的一篇文章,大虾们多多修改 占3月14号坐 |
