In this argument, the author advocates that Tria Island should adopt the regulations of Omni torestore Tria’s fish populations and to protect all of Tria’s marine wildlife. To support this argument the author cites the fact that fish populations ofTria are declining while there is no significant decline in Omni’s fishpopulations due to its effective regulations. The argument is well presentedand seems logical, but it is in fact untenable. The reasons are stated asfollows.
In the firstplace, the author fails to establish the causal relation between decline andoverfishing. The argument is unacceptable unless there is compelling evidenceto support the connection between the events. The author overlooks otherpossible explanations for this declining phenomenon. Perhaps just as the authorsays, the situation of fish populations decreasing is blamed on population, which is although forbidden still exists for a long time. And it would weakenthe author assertion that overfishing is responsible for the significantdecline in fish.
Even assuming theforegoing causal relation, the author fails to consider the dissimilaritiesbetween Tria and Omni that might help to bring about a different result forTria if Tria adopting the regulations of Omni. For instance, Tria is colderrecently while Omni is warmer so fish populations in Tria are decreasing. Furthermore, the author assumes the regulations of Omni are better on basis of Omni’sreports. Maybe in order to recommend regulations Omni tells a lie on fishpopulations. Without ruling out such and other possibilities, the author cannotconvince me what resulted in Omni would bring about the same result in Tria.
The last but notthe least important, even if the author can substantiate the foregoingassumptions and evidence is reliable, the argument jumps to the conclusion thatit is the best way to protect fish and all of marine wildlife with Omni’sregulations and neither any scientific evidence nor any anecdotal evidence isprovided to confirm this conclusion. Common sense tells us that marine wildlifenot only includes fish, but some other species, and maybe they are more fragileto pollution that is controlled. Moreover, there is no evidence on whether itis the best way. Perhaps some other regulations such as spreading environmentalawareness are more effective.
In conclusion, theauthor’s argument has not convinced me that adopting Omni’s regulations is thebest way for Tria because the argument mentioned above is not based on validevidence or sound reasoning, neither of which is dispensable for a conclusiveargument. To better evaluate this argument, I would like the author to providesome more persuasive evidence about environment of Omni and Tria and content ofOmni’s regulations, reason more convincingly and take every possibleconsideration into account.
