University of Applied Arts Vienna
dieAngewandte
The University of Applied Arts Vienna is home to more than 1,800 students,
many of whom come from other countries both in and outside Europe. The
range of programs offered is diverse and includes architecture, fi ne arts
(painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, ceramics), stage design, design
(fashion, graphic design, graphics and advertising, landscape design),
industrial design, media design (transmedia arts, digital art), conservation and
restoration, pedagogic studies for artistic teaching disciplines, textile design
and handicrafts. It is precisely the diversity of these artistic disciplines, which
is supplemented by a large number of scientifi c subjects that contributes to the
special atmosphere that prevails at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
Urban Strategies Program Objectives
Urban strategies, addressing the city as the central fi eld of action in today‘s
production of architecture, concerns the present as well as the future.
Strategies, in this context, refer to the synthesis of research, design, and
intervention. The only legitimate basis from which projects can be developed
and argued for is the diagrammatic modeling of the context. Special attention
should be directed at the examination of habitual patterns of one’s own
behavior and judgment. Only then it is possible to turn the forces of urban
reality, specifi cally their economic and technological impact, into fertile ground
for project work. Closely connected with these analytical refl ections is the
development and review of new models and patterns of urban organization
(the city and buildings as elements of a non-linear continuum of events).
This postgraduate course of studies is designed to offer guidance towards
independence through an open and intensive discourse, which, as a matter of
principle, puts everything up for discussion. In this, the objects of investigation
and negotiation are patterns of public activity and behavior as well as private
role models and attitudes.
Wolf D. Prix, Academic Director

Target Audience
The program is designed for both recent graduates and design professionals
that hold a degree in architecture, regional planning or related disciplines
(Bachelor, Diploma or Masters). Each application will be considered
individually after a personal interview and a portfolio review. Generally, the
program emphasizes an experimental, yet methodical approach to urban
design. It encourages the participants to develop and refi ne their individual
skills.
As part of the Master’s program the students will be participating in the
Universities´ lecture series, architectural events, exhibition and take
advantage of further academic opportunities at the University. Successful
completion of the program will lead to the academic title of Master of Science
in Urban Strategies

Emphases / Curriculum
Within three consecutive semesters the latest innovations in urban strategies
will be analyzed and improved upon step by step. To facilitate a wide-ranging
dialogue between teachers and participants, particular courses will be held by
guest professors and cutting-edge architects from well-known institutions from
all over the world.
Each program will have its own “Theme of the Year”, which will be covered
in lectures, discussion panels and workshops in small, team-oriented
groups. Further, each guest lecturer will present an individual topic within
the framework of the theme, which will be investigated by the participants by
carrying out short assignments and projects. By means of the “Theme of the
Year”, urban strategies will be analyzed and dealt with in theory in order to
develop solutions and design concepts. Workshops will give participants the
chance to discuss and evaluate the progress of their projects with the guest
lecturers. The thesis project, which will be presented and discussed at a fi nal
event, will commence the program.

COURSE STRUCTURE
The postgraduate program Urban Strategies requires 3 semesters (including
fi nal examinations) and comprises 50 semester credit hours/90 ECTS. The
workload of each semester equals 30 ECTS – transfer credit points.
Each semester consists of three types of courses; design studio, theory
seminars and editing courses, which are compiled in the formats of
individualized artistic instruction and Seminars. Individualized artistic
instruction is a hybrid of artistic and theoretical contents; and provides an
individualized advice and coaching of artistic project work. Seminars serve
to deepen the artistic and/or scientifi c engagement with a subject. Editing
courses are held within the format of software tutorials. A precondition to a
successful completion is the personal participation and the active engagement
in the courses; participants are expected to develop and present own
achievements on all levels. Emphasis of the particular course types are laid
out according to the main objectives of each semester. Excursions and fi eld
trips are offered to elucidate current topics and further contextualize the
theme of the year in actual situations. Additionally students are encouraged to
participate in particular courses of the University of Applied Arts.
Semester I:
Tools and Concept Acquisition
Lecture Period: Beginning of July to End of September
Study Period: Beginning of October to Mid-October
The fi rst semester introduces students to principles of architectural design theory
and technical skills to analyze conceptualize and project strategic architectural
interventions. The studio in particular emphasizes advanced software tools
for use of spatial analyses, visual representation and design techniques as
well as model making. The semester is organized in four parts and will be
investigated on different levels within the different types of courses:
Design Studio 1
Design Studio 1 is composed of intense comprehensive design workshops
(1-3 weeks) to convey basic and advanced software skills and conceptual
design thinking in a holistic manner. The Design Studio 1 is organized in
four parts and concludes with a case study project investigating the theme
of the year, in which students built their individual repertoire of conceptual
approaches. At the end of the semester the projects are presented and
discussed with a jury.
1. Part: Ideas
2. Part: Reverse Engineering/ Conceptualization
3. Part: Evaluation / Re-conceptualization
4. Part: Representation
Theory 1
Theory 1 introduces basic principles of urban planning and design:
measurements and evaluation techniques are compiled within the framework
of a seminar, consisting of urban analyses accompanied by required reading.
The progress of work is discussed in frequent meetings where students
present their fi ndings. Theory 1 concludes with a portfolio.
1. Part: introduction / seminar, urban and architectural analysis 1
2. Part: seminar, urban and architectural analysis 2
Editing 1
Editing 1 provides basic and advances software acquisition in relation to
Design Studio 1, as well as introductory workshops of particular software from
related fi elds.
1. Part: basic software acquisition / in conjunction with Design Studio 1
2. Part: advanced software acquisition / in conjunction with Design Studio 1
3. Part: introductory workshops of software from related fi eld / in conjunction
with Design Studio 1
4. Part: representational techniques in different media / in conjunction with
Design Studio 1
Semester II:
Methodologies and Modes of Analyses
Lecture Period: Mid-October to End of January
Study Period: Beginning of February to End of February

The second semester focuses on techniques of analyses and individual
theoretical approaches to the course topic. Within excursions, individual and
collective research, data modeling and analyses, specifi c design tasks and
scenario development including software workshop and theory courses,
students will develop individual approaches that lead to a formulation of the
thesis. The semester is organized along three strands of thought that are
refl ected within the different types of courses:
Design Studio 2
Design Studio 2 emphasizes different modes of analyses according to the
theme of the year. Parallel to investigating the particular contextual realm,
students have the opportunity to ground and develop their approaches in
organized excursions and fi eld trips. Additionally a set of design workshops
conducted by experts from various fi elds introduce different approaches
and design methodologies. Within the semester the following issues will be
investigated according to 3 distinct “strand of thoughts”:
Strand of thought 1:
Theme of the year; In-depth investigation and interpretation of the theme of
the year, related to the particular context in question and its spatial, societal,
economical, ecological and cultural implications.
Strand of thought 2:
Urban strategy; refl ection of the discipline, approach to particular urban
strategy
Strand of thought 3:
Tools and methodologies; techniques and language of expression, use of
software – related to the thesis approaches.
Design Studio 2 concludes with the summarized refl ection of the workshops
and investigated analyses, leading to the formulation of a thesis, which is
presented in front of a jury.
Theory 2 / Thesis 1
Theory 2 introduces different design strategies and ideologies emphasizing
the potentialities of the boundaries of the discipline. Students will analyze
canonical and most recent urban projects and strategies. The course
concludes in a document including analytical drawings of the investigated
projects re-read through the theme of the year.
Thesis 1 discusses the collective and individual approaches in parallel to
Design Studio 2 and concludes in a portfolio with summary of the semesters
work, including an outline of the thesis formulation.
Editing 2
Editing 2 introduces advanced prototyping technologies, and new technologies
with a potential impact on design approaches in short intense workshops.
Semester III:
Thesis Project
Lecture Period: Beginning of March to Md-June
Final Thesis: End of June
The thesis semester allows for an in-depth investigation of the individual
approaches, research questions, methodologies and design strategies,
resulting in the thesis project developed in drawings, models, animations. The
thesis project will be presented and discussed at a fi nal event.
Design Thesis Project
The fi nal design course provides the framework for students to develop their
thesis projects. Students will be mentored through the process in frequent
individual and group meetings discussing the development of the projects, and
are individually supported on a technical and software level. Visiting faculty
give students the possibility to critically refl ect and evaluate the progress of
their work.
Theory /Thesis 2
Thesis 2 introduces students to the methodologies of thesis formulation.
Emphasis is on the defi nition of a particular methodology as well as the
recapitulation, extent and comprehension of urban design theory, locating the
individual approaches within the current discourse and the theme of the year.
In conjunction with the thesis the course concludes with a thesis portfolio.

ADDITIONAL COURSES
Urban Strategies students are encouraged to attend additional seminars and
lectures at the University. The list below refl ects the most related course
offers. Emphasis is put on particular seminars, which support qualifying for
the program’s semester objectives, and are therefore intentionally considered
in the program’s schedule. However you can take advantage from any
other course within and outside the architectural departments at University
of applied Arts, as long as it does not clash with the regular courses of the
program: please consult Urban Strategies course instructors for clarifi cation.
Urban Strategies and Theory of the Landscape / Univ.-Lect. Rainer Pirker
Historical background and contemporary challenges for urban development
will be the base to discuss the relation of formal and informal developments,
forms of densifi cation, cell population, from building related cities to plot
division and territory thinking, traffi c and transportation in relation to urban
patterns, trends to mega cities, pro and contra master plan, etc.
Real Estate Management / Prof. Holger Hagge
This course is intended to make students aware of future challenges relating
economy and investment business. The course begins with a range of
elucidations on analytic and operational processes in the real estate business
and implements practical examples to illustrate architecture‘s necessity to
adopt a strategic focus on design and quality. In order to prevent economic
limitations and restrictions causing the failure of high-quality projects in
architecture as well as urban development it is vital to know the dynamics of
the (global) real estate business because only with this understanding can
architects deduce optimum strategies.
CNC- Computer Numeric Control / Univ.-Lect. Ivan Tochev
The course shows the possibilities of using CNC machines to create a
physical model from a digital one. Concrete examples will be investigated
Portfolio Management / AProf. Reiner Zettl
Aim of the portfolio management course is a guided development of
representative depictions of the student’s project work done at the university.
The tools for this are the techniques and moods of contemporary visual
communication. The course is a mixture of lecture and discussion of the
student projects.
Energy Design I, II / Prof. Brian Cody
The aim of the course is to develop architectural and urban design
projects with the highest possible effi ciency. Particular emphasis lies within
potentialities of architecture to actively contribute to energy effi ciency. The
building within its physical context should be considered not only as a passive
shell, but will be investigated in regard to its capabilities of producing energy.
In this sense the envelope is not pure separation, but dynamic mediator
between different climatic situations. In a similar way urban areas will be
examined in terms of their active and passive potentials, whereby synergies
will play a crucial role. Objective of the course is to develop a comprehensible
energy strategy for the respective projects.
Architecture and Energy / Univ. -Ass. Bernhard Sommer
The course aims for developing methods to integrate basic knowledge of
building physics and building technology into the design process, to enable
aspiring Architects to take leading roles in this particular domain of increasing
importance. Objective of the course is the linkage of parametric design
methods and software for evaluating the energetic behavior of buildings.
Material Science / Univ. -Ass. Bernhard Sommer
The focus of this lecture is on design relevant aspects of building physics.
Topics are: comfort, climate, daylight requirement, lighting, heat requirement,
cooling, ventilation, acoustic and sound insulation, hygric performance of
buildings, geometry and performance, certifi cation of buildings.
The lecture will be held in two terms (winter and summer).
Architectural History and Theory I, II / Prof. Dr. Matthias Boeckl
The lecture course series “history and theory of architecture“ provides a
survey of Austria’s architectural history in the international context. The
local developments are presented and analyzed in their relation and mutual
dependences with/of European/global developments. The entire course series
takes 8 semesters (4 years), starting from prehistoric times and reaching to
the present. The fi rst year covers the celtic period to the Renaissance, the
second year presents Baroque and the 19th century, the third year is devoited
to the 20th century and the fourth and last year to our times (mediated in a
panorama of ca. 20 topics).
Architectural History and Theory III / Univ.-Lect. Mara Reissberger
The central focus of this course is to investigate Modernism - beyond what
is commonly called the Modern period: Modernism as a dynamic category
that induces disruption and, through confl ict-consciousness and a capacity
for critical analysis marks change. We try to fi nd the catalysts active in the
“modern pasts” - both from within the art-world and from outside - for example
by investigating the impact of the “debate on ornament” on the move towards
the “modern”. This cross-disciplinary course offers an opportunity for analytical
thinking in group discussions, with an eye on future application.
EVENTS
Further more the participants are encouraged to participate at events,
exhibitions and lecture series of the Institute of Architecture in particular and
the University of Applied Arts in general.
Final Reviews
Every semester the Institute of Architecture closes with public fi nal reviews
and diploma presentations, reviewed by internationally renowned architects.
The sessions are distributed among several days to give students the chance
to attend all reviews of all studios.
Architecture Life
Architecture Life is a yearly event that draws together alumni and current
students of the Institute of Architecture in workshops and panel discussions.
SLIVER Lecture and Gallery
In 2007, the Universities Institute of Architecture has initiated an annual series
of lectures and exhibitions. To foster exchange between students, faculty,
professionals and the general public, the IoA SLIVER event series with its
exhibitions, lectures and discussions provides a set of thin but deep ‘slices’
through a variety of design disciplines. IoA SLIVER presents the work and
ideas of international design leaders together with innovative work from the
Angewandte, Vienna and abroad.
The Essence
The annual exhibition “The Essence” of the University of Applied Arts Vienna
presents selected projects and work of each institute as the highlight of the
academic year. The diverse artistic creativity of the “Angewandte” is presented
in selected individual and group works. Exhibited are student works and
projects from the departments architecture, industrial design, fi ne arts, stage
design, design, conservation and restoration and media design. The exhibition
is hosted every year either by a well-established museum or gallery space like
the MAK or the Künstlerhaus.

for other documents, such as insurance and visa, which are required for
residence permit.
With your Student ID and a residence registration document you can apply for
a library card, which allows you to lend books at the University of Applied Arts
Vienna and at all other university libraries in Vienna. Additionally the Student
ID warrants discounts for various cultural institutions of Vienna.

Vienna
Vienna is a former imperial residence that offers top-class art and architecture.
From the gothic St.Stephan´s cathedral to the baroque palaces of emperors
and the aristocracy or the eclectic splendor of the Ringstrasse, from the Art
Nouveau buildings of Otto Wagner to the Haas House by Hans Hollein or the
Gasometer conversions by Coop Himmelb(l)au, Jean Nouvel etc., Vienna is a
city of world-famous architectural gems.
Two of the world’s largest art collections, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and
the Albertina, with its 1.5 million works of graphic art, make Vienna a capital
of the art world. So does the Museumsquartier, one of Europe’s largest center
for modern art. As a music capital, Vienna is recognized around the world
for hosting the Musikverein, the Staatsoper, and many other institutions. As
a literature capital it is the residence of nobel prize laureate 2004 Elfriede
Jelinek.
Life in and around Vienna is very affordable, and it offers plentiful opportunities
for relaxation and sports in the surrounding mountain and sea-side landscape.
Mercer’s 2010 survey highlights: Vienna scores highest for overall quality of
living!
Vienna has a low cost of living in comparison to other capital cities - for
accommodation, food, books, recreation etc. you can calculate 800 Euro per
month. (see “Life in Austria” at
http://www.oead.at/welcome_to_austria/EN/).
Vienna’s history as a melting pot of cultures is refl ected in the life of the city
- on the streets and in the city’s hundreds of bars and restaurants. Vienna is
a nexus between Western and Eastern Europe and various other European
capitals can be reached within a short time: the city is 40 min from Bratislava
by car, 2 hours from Budapest and 4 hours from Prague, Ljubljana or Venice.
By plane it is 1.5 hours to London, Paris, Berlin or Rome and 2.5 hours to
Stockholm or Moscow. Vienna Airport offers many low-fare connections to
destinations worldwide, and is becoming a gateway to the east.
