Paragraph 1: In seeking to describe the origins of theater, one must rely primarily on speculation, since there is little concrete evidence on which to draw. The most widely accepted theory, championed by anthropologists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, envisions theater as emerging out of myth and ritual. The process perceived by these anthropologists may be summarized briefly. 关键大意：以前的人们意识到有一些力量在影响他们的食物供应和well-being，由于对这些问题没有科学上的认识（Having little understanding of natural causes），他们觉得是某种超自然的力量在起作用，所以他们“searches for means to win the favor of these forces”，即，想办法让超自然的力量带来好的结果，即，带给社会福利，比如庄稼多点收成啊洪涝少点啊。他们用的什么means呢？就是进行各种rituals或ceremonies
你看哈，这个明显是说的这些人迷信，他们并不是在试图了解那些真正起作用的forces（科学意思上的）。举个另外的例子，中国古代为什么祭天求雨？明显就是希望下雨（To increase the society’s prosperity），而不是想搞清楚为什么会下雨（To help society members better understand the forces controlling their food supply ）。
