I agree with the generalstatement that college or university should provide students the preparation forwork. But at the same time, we should see the different attitude of manycolleges towards this job preparation field, so it’s too assertive to draw a simpleconclusion before knowing about the specific situations of different colleges.Besides, more preparation for work would inevitably reduce the time forteaching knowledge and principles. So we should think of the problem more syntheticallyexpecting to achieve a balance between these important teaching which may both influencea student’s life.
We live in a worldwhere technology innovations accelerate all the time, and the job market isbecoming more and more competitive especially in the latter 20 years. Knowledgetaught today in college may become obsolete when a student steps in sometime infuture. In this point, there is indeed a require for teachers in college offera meaningful and necessary preparation for work to their students, not only forstudents themselves, but also for enterprise employing students from college.
However, we shouldsee the different condition for jobs. Some university may pay specificattention to teaching associated with applying in real work conditions, whilesome college prefer to teach basic principles that may influence a much furtherdevelopment of a student. The former have spent effort in preparing for jobsthat we cannot ask for more to them in this area.
On the other hand, what the latter kind of university have done is not wrong, to some extents moremeaningful and beneficial for their students. Strong values and ethical standardsare needed to determine how we can put our rote knowledge to use in the workingworld. For instance, the basic values of fairness and equality upon which ourlaw system depends on is very useful when student step in the turbulentvocational sea. And we should also consider that these work preparation wouldoccupy the time used for teaching values and ideas before. So the argument maybe applied to these universities, to do their teaching better, they can try to seeka balance between normal teaching of knowledge and inspiration of life andpractical job assistance.
Insum, job preparation has its value if colleges can deal with allocation of timevery well. And for those colleges having offered students a great amount ofcontact with work, the suggestion is not necessary.
