Issue 59 "Too much emphasis is placed on role models. Instead of copying others, people should learn to think and act independently and thus make the choices that are best for them."
人们把太多的精力放在模型和范例上。人们应该学会独立思考和行动,而不要照搬别人的东西,这样才能做出最好的选择。
Undoubtedly it is true that nobody can make a success simply by copying others, but one should not go too far to be blind to the great benefits of modeling some excellent role models. Modeling others does not necessarily contradict with independent thoughts and behaviors and thus will not distract people from proper choices insofar as they can correctly treat with the role of models.
For one thing, one should be conscious that what role models could benefit people most are not their direct experience, their choices or their habits, but their decent aspiration and high spirits of persisting in their beliefs. Take Forrest Gump, a famous imaginative figure in movies, for example. A dull boy as he appeared, Forrest made a fabulous success in the end. His life experience shocked numerous people into deep meditation about what is success, what is meaning of life and what is the right attitudes to difficulties in life. Also, the prominent success of Forrest greatly evokes people’s aspiration for success, encouraging them to seek for what they value most. Now that Forrest Gump can succeed, why our people with normal intelligence could not? Obviously, this kind of meditation and exhortation will not inhibit people from thinking and acting independently; instead, it will free people from all sorts of obsolete or somewhat mean stereotypes in daily life, helping them make the choice that are best for them. Therefore, the real and perpetual values of role models exist in the form of decent aspiration, spirits and valuable characteristics, which are the common spiritual wealth of the whole society. Once one can appreciate these real values of models, he/she would realize that it is too much to concentrate on the role of models.
Besides the encouraging and spiritual effects of role models, they also can provide people with some practical guidance and experiences. During their course of making success, the models must have accumulated ample experiences, either in the form of truths or of lessons, which are critically useful for their followers. Their experiences that have been proved to be useful can be directly put into effect, while where they were frustrated will be carefully eschewed. Thus by modeling models, people will have a greater chance to make a success and reduce the risk of failure although it couldn’t ensure success. In some sense, without numerous people’ modeling on Bill Gates, there would not be such a prosperous scenario in the development of software technology and market. Almost all the people in the world admire Bill Gates as the first hero in the age of knowledge and information, not simply because of his great aspiration and spirits for success—many other successful people also have the similar spirits and aspirations, but also because he created a new industry, settled a valuable standard for exploring software technology and developing software market, and accumulated practical experiences that have made for the success of next generations.
Of course, modeling others will not ensure a success, just as many people failed as a result of modeling on Bill Gates. When I highlight the role of models, I mean that one should be aware of what deserves modeling and what should be careful to model. According to the above analysis, the decent aspiration and high spirits of role models should be modeled unconditionally by people; so far as the guidance and experiences of models are concerned, people should discriminate between those could be applied to themselves and those couldn’t on the ground of their own circumstances. But, it is not necessarily detrimental on the whole to hammer at the role of models. As long as people can correctly treat with role models, they will not be bogged down into the situation where there are no independent decisions and actions. On the contrary, their independence will benefit from modeling and learning from others. (642 words ) |
