127"Facts are stubborn things. They cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions."
To develop my position, the definition of facts must be clearly established at first. When they refer to those objective and self-evident things, I totally agree with the speaker on the assertion that facts can not be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions. When they mean to those scientific theories, political policies, etc., it is not the case at all.
Believe it or not, some facts are never changed by the exterior strength. They are the truths which have experienced a long-term examination and are labeled as the natural laws or principles. When people are hungry, they must seek out food for their stomachs; Any animal, human included, has to inhale the oxygen and exhale the carbon dioxide everyday; And everyone can not escape the ultimate end, say, death. Water only flows from upside to downside; Sun rises from the east and fall down the west everyday, etc.. Admittedly, all these facts are objective truths that never altered by the subjective wishes, inclinations or emotions, and will continue to maintain their objective in the future.
However, when they refer to scientific theories, facts are often altered with the change of people's perspectives and knowledge level. Some theories that were proved utterly true in the past will be discredited and be demonstrated as incompleteness or even falsehood. Every generation unceasingly explored the unknown in the scientific field, and there necessarily existed some limits, such as cognitive level, scientists’ wishes or inclinations, or the religious oppression etc., that hindered the contemporary scientific development. The former researchers, however, accumulated huge legacies of knowledge and experience. By assimilating and digesting them, present-day scientists and researchers must have their own brand-new perspectives and ideas, some of which may be irrelevant and even totally different to the past outdated theories. The sun-center theory can serve as an apt illustration to this point. In those days, this theory was looked upon as the mere fact, because it was put forward by the Ptolemy and Aristotle who represented the religious authority that controlled people’s wishes and spirits in that time. However, Copernicus challenged and overthrew this theory with his courage and savvy and ultimately established his own theory that the earth and other heaven bodies revolve around the sun, which is proved the truth today. Another case in point is that the Newton's classical mechanics theories, which were deemed as undoubted facts in that time, but later on Einstein proved that they were wrong when it comes to the macroscopic field, or at least they were incomplete.
When it comes to the political field, some facts can also be altered by the wishes or emotions of people, especially the potent. On the one hand, Politicians and legislators are responsible for making wise and diplomatic which require them to make creations and reformations in that the past policies may be unfitted for today's sociopolitical situations. They should also enact, amend and perfect the regulations based on the wishes and wills of the public. Only doing this can they maintain a sagacious government and a stable nation. This is why every government in the world assembles the delegates to discuss and amend the extant laws, regulations and policies annually. On the other hand, politicians and governmental officials often withhold, adulterate and even fabricate some facts from the public based on the personal wills and inclinations in that these facts are related to the national confidentiality, the individual privacy, or even some illegal affairs. Thus, political “facts” often can not keep their original things.
In conclusion, it should be admitted that some basic facts are stubborn things that can never be altered by the outside power, no matter wishes, inclinations, or the passions, but when they refer to some concrete theories and policies in the labile flux, they will be ameliorated and developed by people’s knowledge level, or even forged by people’s wishes and inclinations.
