11月7日 20100313 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People can learn more from watching television than reading books
With the development of video recording and transmission technology, TV programs becomes more and more diversify and plentiful by which people can obtain increasing information including the recent news, hot topics , training courses and the list still can go on. However, although the TV programs are so various, I still believe that people can learn more from reading books.
It is true that nowadays TV can provide more and more information from nearly all aspects of our life. You can get to know the updated situation about the revolution happened in some country; you can learn how to cook from some cooking programs; you can obtain the insights from specialists. Every one of us have been more or less benefited by learning directly from TV, Especially for those programs of education purposes, such as TED speaks for those ideas worth spreading, open courses form top schools introducing the classes to normal people, and so on. Therefore, watching television indeed have provided us more opportunities to access more information, learn skills and understand controversial topics.
However, when watching television was compared to reading books in terms of which one is more useful for learning knowledge, reading book is definitely be the winner.
Let’s begin with the contents these two different vectors can load. As all we know, TV is a multi-media player which contains sound, image, text and video. However, the book only contains texts. Although it seems that books are disadvantaged in terms of methods for loading information, it actually was the most advantage books have. In order to express exactly the same thing, TV will use more resources than book will. Integration with sound, image and video actually need a lot of labor work, human resources and time. However, using text-only method to express even the most complicated idea could be far more convenient and easy than TV.
Secondly, reading books makes it possible to provide more profound insights and inspirations for people to think more deeply and logically than watching TV. As we have experienced, text description force us to imagine and reconstruct that situations in our mind, thus stimulate your thinking and imagination by which you can get completely understanding for the description or even new findings. On the contrary, TV programs are usually considered as the second creation of art, which sometimes lose or even misrepresent important information for you to understand the original information. For instance, watching a film about the world greatest novel “War and peace” will never grant you the same experience as you can get from reading the novel in text. One thousand audience have one thousand Hamlet , but on the TV show, you can only get the Hamlet from the director.
Last but not the least, TV contains various information which usually means more distractions for people. TV was usually considered as an entertainment instead of tools for learning for most of us. That’s because for most of time, TV was flooded with all kinds of advertisements, films, music, talk show and other programs other than educational programs. It is not good tools for us to learn surrounded with different kinds of distractions.
So, for my aspect, although television is a good way to learn some superficial, simple knowledge, reading book is a far more better tools to learn and pass our knowledge from generation to generation, |
