"The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies."
The assertion of the speaker seems irresponsible and lacking morality in most people's eyes, however, in a democratic society with complete and fair laws as well as rules, it is the truth that the only responsibility of corporate executives is to make as much money as possible for their companies.
First of all, when the executives stay within the law, provided the laws are fair and appropriate, the responsibility for them to make as much money as possible for their companies would not only brings high profit for companies and employees but also many benefits to the society and the mass. Actually in modern times, companies are the main and element parts of economy system. It is not difficult to see the causal relationship between the thriving of companies and the prosperity of the society. On one hand, when companies are making their money, they usually tend to extend their productive forces and more employees would be employed consequently. At the same time, the wages of all stuff will be promoted. Hence, the increase of all people’s well-beings would be expected. On the other hand, when profit becomes higher, the taxes from the companies will surely increase. And with more taxes the government would have the ability to perfect its medical system, public education, to improve the natural environment, to deal with the industrial pollution, and even to purchase more arms. So from this point, the executives who make money for their companies make great contribution to both public and the society.
What is more, there are no other responsibilities for the executives. People always think the executives and the companies should have some social accountabilities, which are considered to be the symbols of a responsible company. While I think as long as the executives and the companies stay in laws, their only responsibility is to make profits; and others, such as taking care of the retired employees, the duty to contribute money to poor, should leave to the government and others social organizations. Companies are supporters of the whole society; what they should do for the country and people are provide jobs, produce merchandise, and make wealth for the country as well as themselves. Always, social responsibility is just too heavy a burden for companies. When China was in the program economy, it was just a case in point. About twenty years ago, almost all Chinese companies had to take heavy social burdens which make the companies have neither money nor energy to engage in their business. And as companies losing their money, the economic recession and disappearance of vigor of the society followed. Nowadays, any country with perfect law system and social security system would not lay heavy burdens on companies, such as America, in which companies are not forced to have some specific moral and social responsibilities but they are real pillar of the nation.
However, if the executives could do some charities without the sacrifice of the profit of the companies, the reputation of the executives and the companies would raise a lot. For instance, there is entrepreneur and philanthropist called Yifu Shao in China, who contributed a lot to education. These deeds won him and his film company high reputation; and of course, the higher profit followed.
After all, in my opinion, paying taxes and support the society and country is the only responsibility which the executives and companies must take into account. Yet moral responsibilities and the philanthropic contributions to the society are some kind of good things, they are not a must. |
