求助……意外收到Columbia的AD……

第一次发贴，之前申请啥也不懂，也不注重跟别人交流，自己一抹黑瞎弄，现在想想真是2得要死=。=

本科法学转专业申社会学的PhD，没什么研究经历，也对社会学没什么太多的了解……所以收了一大把的拒信（有一个WL，之前发信问说希望不大）。
当时这么申是因为以前一直想搞学术，但今年发生几个事情反思了一下自己发现可能其实不太适合做学术。MA的项目只申了JHU的SAIS BC，上周收到拒信。
于是现在在准备补申欧洲的一些项目（相比之下，这些项目我研究得比去年申美国时更仔细一些，从现在看来也更符合我的兴趣），材料基本弄完了，就差邮寄出去了……然后今天早上收到Columbia当时申社会学PhD时附带申的MA项目的AD……

现在整个人凌乱了……因为是附带申的（申请系统上有个选项，选了之后就申了……材料什么的跟PhD的用的都是一样的），对这个项目完全没了解，刚在Columbia的网站上查了一下，有这么一段介绍

The free-standing MA program in Sociology is designed to enhance the skills of business managers, consultants, and public administrators, as well as to provide conceptual and practical research tools for a number of areas in applied sociology. Along with traditional research methods, new techniques for analyzing issues in various substantive areas are investigated. Students are encouraged to use sociological approaches to assess and address issues that they have encountered in workplace or organizational settings.

楼主，我也录取了这个项目，跟你一样本科不是社会学专业，就这个领域了解也比较局限。这个项目理论上国际学生是一年修完，:dizzy: 我想延期一年半，不知道可不可以。
今年就我看到的，国内录取的人数至少有五个，但并不确定大家伙去不去。我问了项目负责人，上一届一共录取了19人，其中一半是国际学生。

The free-standing MA program in Sociology offers an opportunity for intensive, short-term study in sociology. Open to full or part-time students, the program combines a solid foundation in theory and methods with the flexibility to pursue particular areas of interest.
The department serves as a base for students to explore the discipline and link to the university's dynamic research communities. Courses in the department encourage students to explore substantive areas using a range of approaches, from traditional to cutting edge techniques in the social sciences. Through coursework, students work with faculty to explore specific themes and to develop their own research. Seminars, talks, research groups and conferences throughout the university provide a stimulating environment to investigate specific themes and connect with scholars across disciplines.

As a free-standing degree, the MA in sociology offers students a set of conceptual and practical research tools applicable to a variety of career paths. Our alumni have gone on to employment in the public and private sectors. Alumni also continue on to PhD programs in the social
sciences and professional degrees in areas including education, social work, law and public health.

Students are required to register for two Residence Units and to complete courses totaling 24 points, of which at least 18 must be taken for a letter grade and no more than six for R credit.

The department offers two courses specifically designed for the Masters program, Sociological Theory (Sociology G4051) and Qualitative Research Design (course number to be added).
Among the courses taken for a letter grade, one must be Sociological Theory (Sociology G4051)
and another must be in methods. For methods, students may take either Statistics in the QMSS program (course number to be added) or Qualitative Research Design (course number to be added). Students who wish to take both methods courses in addition to the theory course may
do so.

Students must write two substantial research papers for courses taken within the department. Each paper must be approved by a different professor within the department.

While most courses are taken within the Department of Sociology, students may take courses in other departments. Students wishing to take a course outside of the department must obtain written permission from the MAO Advisor, Denise Milstein.

The Free-Standing MA degree is independent from the PhD program. Students seeking a PhD degree should apply directly to the PhD program.

我有个朋友在columbia读anthropology的ma，也选过社会学系的课，说这个free standing的ma一届一共就十几个人，据说上课质量不错，应该也能为academic做准备。

同收到这个项目的AD，但决定不去，如果LZ考虑读完MA继续申PhD的话，那么这个项目只有一学年，时间比较紧，估计只有把项目读完了，才好申请PhD，也就是2014fall了。。。

而且感觉这个项目还是很有含金量的，并不水
可以的话我也想延期到一年半啊，最好有个暑假能够在那边实习什么的

嘛……我现在手里没有PhD的offer，WL是Duke的，但估计无望转正了
选择就是申欧洲一年期的硕士项目或者读这个，不过欧洲的一年期的项目都不是社会学，如果真要申PhD的话，一年之后我的情况跟现在一模一样，还是无社会学背景无学术研究，再申相当于gap了一年又拿一样的材料去碰运气，所以还是读个硕士提高一下自己，回头也更有希望申到好的PhD呢

不过今年有件事情对我打击挺大的，也反思了一下自己，感觉其实不太能静下心来做学术，所以现在比较倾向实务一点的项目。而且NYC对于一直想去联合国的我来说，实在很有吸引力。争取能在那边找到联合国的实习就最好了
总之，如果最终决定要读PhD的话是不是2014fall去读问题倒是不大，这两年又不会白过

其实社会学在美国是相当非主流的学科额。。。尤其楼主没有统计基础的话过去会比较辛苦，我倒是建议如果有更好就业的项目，去好就业的。社会学的话比较适合读博士，别说MA1年找工作，就是BA起薪要求最低的这种，也是不可能找到工作的。楼主要有回国和再申请的思想准备。

嘛……统计学基础是有的，因为修了经济学的双学位
当然准备再申请啊，本来一把rej的时候下定决心放弃社会学了，补申的以国际法和国际经济法项目为主，现在有重新萌生了一点继续申社会学PhD的念头
不过可能还是不会申PhD了吧（今年一个事情让我觉得之前一直有点小看搞学术的KB度了。。。:L ），所以可能继续申请一些国际法或国际经济的项目
总之哥大这个MA吸引我的地方其中之一就是能够去NYC近距离接触一下联合国：）
