issue 60

Issue 60 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

The speaker asserts that it is the artist, not the critic who gives society of lasting value. I strongly agree with this assertion since as I see it, although critics assist people to appreciate works of art from diverse perspective, its lasting value, compared with that is created by artist, is a minor one.

Critics do play an important part in the development and sustenance of artistic creation that are best reflected in three aspects. For one thing, equipped with professional proficiency and individual attention focused on certain artists, critics are placed in a better place to dig the underlying implication out of the otherwise abysmal internal world of artists. The second advantage concerning this evaluative process is that by searching out the most successful and prominent works, the critics save the general public’s time of onerous tasks of wandering through artistic production of all levels and painfully decide which one is of the highest appreciative value. The last influence that critics have on artist is how their response and reflection will lead the artist in their creative process. By surfing the artist with tentative evaluation and cogent criticism, the artist will benefit from this process. While it sounds plausible to claim the strong position held by art critics, we should by no way to equate its evaluative process to the process of art creation since it is the later, which contribute something that transcend time and space and thus bestow society of lasting value.

Despite the contributive endeavor made by critics, we should notice that it is the artists who render society works of lasting value. To fully appreciate the above the statement, we need go no further to see the different ambition carried by artists and critics. For the artists, the primary objective of them is to express their inner inspiration and impetus brought out during their artistic creation process or to reflect the general trend and ideological changes occurred during social upheaval and radial ideological renaissance and enlightenment. For example, the painting by Picasso hardly seems to be attractive to critics at that time but turns out later to be a great painter whose works is of lasting value to the society. The same case happens to Van Gogh, whose artistic perspective is in no accordance with the prevailing critics at that time. Whenever we encounter the glorious artistic heritage of the artists, no matter in the fields of art, literature, architecture, etc, we could not help to marvel about the vivid images, profound implication and lively reflection of the social background or individual meditation carried out by those works. On the other hand, as I illustrated above, the primary contribution of critics is to provide perspective, guidance and reflection instead of works of art themselves. This contribution, is rightly handled, could exert a beneficiary influence upon the artists and the general public as a whole, otherwise, and would also be a detrimental power in distorting the evaluative direction of public and the artistic value of works. Last but not least, artists endue their works with compassion, inspiration that would be perceived by sensitive viewers spontaneously, and preoccupied with artistic criticism would act noting more than bondage upon ones intuition and empathy. Thus, through this enlightening process, the artists create something of last value upon people as well as the society.

To sum up, I firmly believe that it is the artists, during their artistic creation, contribute to the society of lasting value, no matter in the aspect of ascetic evaluation and ideological enlightenment. The critics, while sometimes helpful in aiding public to evaluate, choose or providing advice or reflection to artists is mainly focus on interpretation, not creation.

The speaker asserts that it is the artist, not the critic who gives society of lasting value. I strongly agree with this assertion since as I see it, although critics assist people to appreciate works of art from diverse perspective(好), its lasting value, compared with that is created by artist, is a minor one. (后半句这么说恐怕不太好,建议改一下顺序)

Critics do play an important part in the development and sustenance of artistic creation that are best reflected in three aspects (好像是That … are reflected in 3 aspects). For one thing, equipped with professional proficiency and individual attention focused on certain artists, critics are placed in a better place to dig (appreciate/unearth) the underlying implication out of the otherwise abysmal internal world of artists. The second advantage (comma) concerning this evaluative process (comma) is that by searching out (out?) the most successful and prominent works, the critics save the general public’s time of (肯定?不是of) onerous tasks of wandering through artistic production of all levels and painfully decide which one is of the highest appreciative value. The last influence that critics have on artist is how their response and reflection will lead the artist in their creative process (how?倒是说啊J).

For the artists, the primary objective of them is to express their inner inspiration and impetus brought out during their artistic creation process or to reflect the general trend and ideological changes occurred during social upheaval and (or) radial ideological renaissance and enlightenment (好). For example, the painting by Picasso hardly seems to be attractive to critics at that (his)time but turns out later to be a great painter (主谓不一致,前边还是画呢后边就变成人了) whose works is of lasting value to the society. The same case happens to Van Gogh, whose artistic perspective is in no accordance with the prevailing critics at that time. Whenever we encounter the glorious artistic heritage of the artists, no matter in the fields of art, literature, architecture, etc, we could not help to marvel about the vivid images, profound implication and lively reflection of the social background or individual meditation carried out by those works(好). On the other hand, as I illustrated above, the primary contribution of critics is to provide perspective, guidance and reflection instead of works of art themselves. Thus, through this enlightening process, the artists create something of last value upon people as well as the society. 说理有点问题吧,开始说的例子都是不被当时的critics所接受,如果改成不被一些critics所接受(不说当时)也许好一些,我感觉有一点messy,也许是我自己头太晕了
