61"High-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize are actually damaging to society because they suggest that only a few people deserve such recognition."
I believe the fact that only a few people deserve high-profile awards does not damage the society, since such implication does not deny the equality of people, and these awards serve to be indispensable drives in contemporary society. I disagree with the speaker on the title statement in that he/she has wrongfully interpreted the message conveyed by these awards.
First of all, all these high-profile awards are based on the recognition of equality of people. Everyone has the right to contend for the award, as people see from Nobel to Olympic, from Oscar to Grammy, and so forth. High-profile as they are, these awards are open to anyone who wish to vie for, as long as he/she has certain merit required. Consequently, this sense of equality is conveyed in these award; people are informed that they have the chance to get such desirable awards, only if they work hard to improve themselves, or fully develop the talent in a certain field. For example, Nobel is for those with most distinguished academic attainments, or Olympics are for those with the best performance; no one is privileged but all are judged by the same criterion, that is, the merit. These high-profile awards always ensure that they are open to all, and therefore ensure their impartiality.
Besides, that only few people deserve such recognition is reasonable for such glory is consummate with their contribution to the society. For instance, the Nobel Prize is given so as to acknowledge the recipient's contribution to his/her field of study. Masters such as Einstein in physics, Woodward in chemistry, the value of their works is highly appreciated and irrefutable. Hence for others it is unreasonable to be discontent for their receiving the award, since they have consumed time and effort in their fields, and the award is a recognition to their productive devotion. Moreover, high-profile awards can serve to be a stimulant for insiders. For example, one of the 2001 Nobel Prize winner of chemistry said that he has been longing for the prize ever since he initiated the studies on chemistry. The stimulation from high-profile awards tend to be more long lasting than that from other source, and thus better concentrate one in his/her field. In this sense they become very helpful in maintaining intensive focus, which leads to increased chance of discovery and creation, and the society is always the beneficiary.
Not only do they work as effective encouragement for the insiders, high-profile awards also has a great influence on the masses. This point need no further illustration as people see kids who adore the Olympic winners are inspired to participate in sports. The high-profile awards influence the masses by their prominence. By informing the masses of the achievements of the recipients, they promote familiarity, sometimes better understanding in certain fields, and the development in these field benefit from it eventually. As the Nobel prize attracts countless youth every year to devote themselves to fields of inquiry, several disciplines have taken the advantage of the recruit and progressed greatly, such as chemistry and physics. Hence the society become the ultimate beneficiary of the high-profile awards as all discoveries, creations, productions turn into the common wealth, thanks to the effort of these awards.
In conclusion, I don't agree with the speaker on his/her opinion on the high-profile awards. It is unquestionably righteous that only a few distinguished people deserve these awards because of the impartial judgment on their merits, and high-profile awards can benefit the society by drawing attention and promote devotion.
