61"High-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize are actually damaging to society because they suggest that only a few people deserve such recognition."

I believe the fact that only a few people deserve high-profile awards does not damage the society, since such implication does not deny the equality of people, and these awards serve to be indispensable drives in contemporary society. I disagree with the speaker on the title statement in that he/she has wrongfully interpreted the message conveyed by these awards.

First of all, all these high-profile awards are based on the recognition of equality of people. Everyone has the right to contend for the award, as people see from Nobel to Olympic, from Oscar to Grammy, and so forth. High-profile as they are, these awards are open to anyone who wish to vie for, as long as he/she has certain merit required. Consequently, this sense of equality is conveyed in these award; people are informed that they have the chance to get such desirable awards, only if they work hard to improve themselves, or fully develop the talent in a certain field. For example, Nobel is for those with most distinguished academic attainments, or Olympics are for those with the best performance; no one is privileged but all are judged by the same criterion, that is, the merit. These high-profile awards always ensure that they are open to all, and therefore ensure their impartiality.

Besides, that only few people deserve such recognition is reasonable for such glory is consummate with their contribution to the society. For instance, the Nobel Prize is given so as to acknowledge the recipient's contribution to his/her field of study. Masters such as Einstein in physics, Woodward in chemistry, the value of their works is highly appreciated and irrefutable. Hence for others it is unreasonable to be discontent for their receiving the award, since they have consumed time and effort in their fields, and the award is a recognition to their productive devotion. Moreover, high-profile awards can serve to be a stimulant for insiders. For example, one of the 2001 Nobel Prize winner of chemistry said that he has been longing for the prize ever since he initiated the studies on chemistry. The stimulation from high-profile awards tend to be more long lasting than that from other source, and thus better concentrate one in his/her field. In this sense they become very helpful in maintaining intensive focus, which leads to increased chance of discovery and creation, and the society is always the beneficiary.

Not only do they work as effective encouragement for the insiders, high-profile awards also has a great influence on the masses. This point need no further illustration as people see kids who adore the Olympic winners are inspired to participate in sports. The high-profile awards influence the masses by their prominence. By informing the masses of the achievements of the recipients, they promote familiarity, sometimes better understanding in certain fields, and the development in these field benefit from it eventually. As the Nobel prize attracts countless youth every year to devote themselves to fields of inquiry, several disciplines have taken the advantage of the recruit and progressed greatly, such as chemistry and physics. Hence the society become the ultimate beneficiary of the high-profile awards as all discoveries, creations, productions turn into the common wealth, thanks to the effort of these awards.

In conclusion, I don't agree with the speaker on his/her opinion on the high-profile awards. It is unquestionably righteous that only a few distinguished people deserve these awards because of the impartial judgment on their merits, and high-profile awards can benefit the society by drawing attention and promote devotion.

Issue 61 "High-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize are actually damaging to society because they suggest that only a few people deserve such recognition."

Admittedly it is true that only a few people can obtain some high-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize, but this fact does not constitute a justification for the allegation that the high-profile awards impose a negative effect on society because this allegation is completely built upon a distorted appreciation of people’s motivation and the social function of the high-profile awards.

Many people mistakenly believe the incentive effect of the high-profile awards as the primary aim of these awards and thus conclude that the probability to approach the high-profile awards is such low that most people will be seriously frustrated and discouraged. As a matter of fact, however, the high-profile awards play a far more important role in imbuing social member with some valuable spirits, virtues and ideologies than in encouraging people. The Nobel Prize awarded to Einstein was more a confirmation of his nonesuch spirits of scientism than of his great contribution to the society. Mother Teresa was conferred with the Nobel Prize for her great sense of humanity, not for her real contribution to the enterprise of humanity because many millionaires such as Bill Gates perhaps contributed much more if their contribution could be measured in terms of money. Therefore, the incentive effect of the Nobel Prize is secondary, and its real meaning exists in its endeavors to highlight the value of scientism, humanity and world peace. Owing to its far-reaching social influence, the Nobel Prize can help modern society shape a new but much healthier social atmosphere, in which scientism and scientists will be widely respected, devotion into the sciences and lofty individual aspirations will be well appreciated, children will be better nurtured and grow up, and as a result the society will be greatly benefited, rather than be damaged as many people imagined.

Not only the high-profile awards do not aim to encourage people to seek for the utilitarian purpose, but also individuals are not intended to work for the high-profile awards due to the extraordinary difficulty to obtain the high-profile awards. No owners of the Nobel Prize have confessed that the purpose of obtaining this prize had significantly affected their daily work and life, and some owner even say that the Nobel Prize is completely an unexpected gift for them. The Nobel Prize is accessible only to those who are unutterably indulged into seeking for lofty individual interests, exploring the unknown world and serving for the enterprise of human progress. There is no possibility for people who have some utilitarian purpose to acquire the high-profile awards because any utilitarian thought will distract them from devoting all their lives into their enterprises. What is more, even if people have devoted all their lives into the enterprises that they really love and made some significant achievements, how close they are to the Nobel Prize also heavily depends on whether they are Fortune’s favored children in virtue of the great uncertainty in sciences and other enterprises. The motivation to obtain the high-profile awards therefore is not only unadvisable but also unpractical. Except for some who are conceited to the extent of ignorance, no one in reality would regard the high-profile awards as the final aim of their endeavors and thus no one would really feel anxious about the low probability to deserve such recognition.

To sum up, the main aim of the high-profile awards is not to encourage people to serve for a particular purpose, but to shape and define the social members and conduce to the formation of a valuable social atmosphere. Individuals also are not intended to work for the high-profile awards. Therefore, no damaging effect will be imposed upon the society by the fact only a few people deserve the high-profile awards.  ( 617 words )

impose a negative effect on society because this allegation (because this allegation有点啰嗦,这里用逗号吧。再把连词改一改)is completely built upon a

seriously/(severely) frustrated and discouraged

Not only the high-profile awards do not aim to encourage people to seek for the utilitarian purpose, but also individuals are 老毛病又犯了,而且not only ... do not很诡异,改

The Nobel Prize is accessible only to (accessible

also heavily depends on whether they are Fortune’s favored childr (are heavily dependent, 后边Fortune favored用得不好)

2,Admittedly it is true that only a few people can obtain some high-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize, but ->delete 'but'.
3,this fact does not constitute a justification for the allegation -> this does not justify the allegation
4,upon a distorted appreciation of people’s motivation and the social function of the high-profile awards. -> upon either a distorted....motivation or the....awards. the logical relationship of the two items is independent, right?
5,main aim ->redundancy.delete main.
6,Individuals also are not ....->Also, individuals do not....
7,by the fact only a few people ...-> by the fact that only a few people...
