6-05 When a new technological devices become available. Some people buy it right away, while others will wait until many have acquired it. Which view do you agree with and explain why.


I think, for most of us, the idea technological devices should have characteristics as following: it could provide us with convenience and swift in our work and entertainment and it also should be of good quality and reasonable price. Therefore, it seems that buying them after many others have already acquired them is a better choice than being the first person to eat crab.

Firstly, the initially high price of the new technological devices always decline after a period time of appearing on the market. At the beginning, the company might restrict the circulation of their new products to attract some fashionable consumers and set the price at a level to establish a high-grade image for their products. However, this limited consuming population obviously cannot accomplish the companies’ sales planning. On the next step they might take some strategies to draw the attention of general public by cutting down their price, producing an illusion that we buy a high-grade product with fewer money. This phenomenon is ubiquitous, from electric devices to automobiles, so it seems that waiting patiently could enable you to save money.

Secondly, the credible information about a new device put on the market usually could be obtained from the firsthand experience of other consumers. It is well-known that today many remarks about the new device on magazines or on the Internet actually are intentionally designed to propagate the product and usually hide its defects because the evaluation columns often are sponsored by commercial institutions which have produced these devices. At this case, the information provided by individual users who raised problems and verified the merits of the device through their own practice has considerable reference value for our decision. For instance, When IPONE 4 firstly come into markets, many people are crazy about it and described it as perfect that resulted in thousands of people following the trend to buy it. However, not after a long time, there were many problems which have been reflected by consumers emerged, such as the dysfunctional mobile antenna and the vulnerable screen. Therefore people now are likely to take others complains into consideration and make a more sensible choice.

Moreover, we can get some suggestion about the real service performance of the devices from others practice. Some kinds of dazed functions in a new device are just advertising gimmicks which are actually not of practical use and often misguided the consumers with the misconception that the more functions the products have, the more useful value they will get. Therefore, matching the recommendation from who have already used them with our own requirements, we can choose the devices that can facilitate our work and life veritably.

In sum, buying the new technological devices after many others have already acquired them is not only an economic choice but also we can get what really meet our demand.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One of the ways that parents can help children be ready for adult life is to ask them to do a part-time job. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, children are increasingly encouraged to participate in part-time work by their parents for the purpose of enabling them to experience the adult life ahead of time. I totally agreed with the statement because, in my opinion, doing some part-time jobs can benefit children a lot in several respects, such as the choice of future career, the capacity of living independently and understanding of the society deeply and insightfully.

At the first place, only by practicing will children figure out what they really want to do in the future and will they get suggestion from the veteran and make some change to prepare for their career. It is well known that the campus is a relative isolated environment for studying and children hardly have opportunities to contact with the society, let alone to understand the working contents in different business. In this case, spending spare time on some jobs within their ability might enable them to know their advantages and disadvantages and make the right decision associated with their career. My friend with an excellent basis for drawing was used to done some odd jobs in different companies for each summer. There was an advertising company among them. After working there she kept telling me she was so impressed by the creative imagination and innovative idea that she wanted to be a full member of the team one day. Later after brief talk with the workers and the HR, she knew advertising is not as simple as she imagined which have high requirements for painting skills, specific knowledge about image processing and meticulously observation of daily life. Since that time, painting and recording the small inspiration become regular homework for her. Finally she has her wishes fulfilled, and now she was a successful idea-offer there.

At the next place, the original intention of parents might be to make children learn to live without protection and help from them. Firstly, It is more helpful to give them some breads than to teach them how to make a living. Secondly, with the paycheck got through their own endeavor, they might realize that spending money is always easier than making money and appreciate the parent’s hard work. Thirdly, by dealing with the problems they confronted on their own through the circle of making mistakes and correcting them, the capacity of thinking through a problem insightfully would be considerable improved and they will also realize the importance of taking the responsibility to fix the faults they made.

In sum, getting part-time jobs definitely is a good way to preparing children for adult life, the way by which they will know how their parents feel and solve problems by themselves bravely.

Do you agree or disagree? Movies and television programs should present stories that good people being awarded and bad people being punished.

I think almost everyone have the experience that at the end of a movie we will feel strong regretful if the bad guy was not punished for his unforgivable sins. We are born to be told that justice would overcome vice forever, however, when the movies and television programs with happy endings do bring people with the sense of justice, we should be aware of the reality in our society that it also happens the good people are unknown by the public and the bad people suffer no penalties at all.

Admittedly, the heartening stories ended with good and bad people all get what they deserved in movies or on TV have considerable positive impacts on the belief and behavior of the public. The brave characters in movie or television programs set good examples and act as a role model to all of us which would imperceptibly influence our mind that upholding justice is our oblige and would be appreciated by others while the evil was always depreciated and penalized. For instance, in Hollywood’s classic police-gangster film, at the beginning the valiant policeman was always misunderstood by colleagues, society even his family, but with the belief of justice, risking his own life, finally the criminal was arrested and inflicted severe chastisement, at the same time the policeman was highly awarded again. Although this plot has been put on in thousands of films, we never tired of them and are encouraged to take part in the maintenance of justice.

However, sometimes this perfect film scenario would conceal the reality in our society that virtue do not have its own reward and misdeed also would not come back to haunt the people who did them. Our legal system are not perfect, it often happens that helping somebody fell down on the street inversely was tarnished as pushing the person to the ground, and corrupt officials succeed in escaping the censor of legal department, squandering the money for tax payers willfully. These cruel problems just reminded us of defects in our legal system and prompted us to take some measures to fix them. If we are blinded by the universal justice in film and believe we lived in a world which made a clear distinction between reward and penalty, it is too late when serious consequences arise from this.

In sum, the just stories presented in movies or on TV do have positive influence on people’s behavior while they also blind us about the defects in our legal system and mortal condition which cannot be ignored.

Recently, we have so many sources of news and information, so that we cannot tell which one is the real one or who is telling the truth.

We are now living in a world with information explosion which means we are forced to face the unimaginable production and propagation of information that beyond our ability to deal with. I think in daily life most people have ever encountered the difficulty in telling the falsehood from the truth when they have so many sources of news. When we dive to the bottom of this problem, we would find that the individual free speech, twisted news provided by media just for catering the public’s appetite both have a share.

At the first place, regardless of the influence they might have on others, everyone would like to express their opinions objectively or just for their own benefit in many ways almost without any cost, especially through the Internet. In this case, myriad of information, either stating the fact or fabricating lies for unspeakable purpose, is widely and quickly spread, directly leading to the difficulty in discerning truth. Such as the rumor of doomsday in 2012 after the popular film <2012> which has induced a hot debate on the destiny of our planet. On the one side is increasing natural catastrophes reported all around the world, bringing people with the fact that our planet have already in seriously bad conditions which make the doomsday seem to be plausible, while on the other side are the clarification from scientists that these phenomenon are just natural climate change caused by periodical activity of sun and the core of earth. Although it looks like that the doomsday might just be some rumors disseminated by some with evil intentions to foment panic in public, what about the uncountable people and animals died from the calamities, is there no clue for us about our destiny? People obviously lost their orientation to go.

At the next place, in order to maximize their profit, media just give people the information that they are interested in, for instance, the gossip of celebrity whether real or not. Michel Jackson, the most famous super music star has been accused by child abuse which shocked almost everyone in the world. At a result, he gradually relied on drugs to relieve his tremendous mental pressure from media and public, and finally died with hideous agonies. However, all the truth came out after he dies which startled the public again. What people lost is not only a great treasure of pop music, but also a great philanthropist. With the lessons like this, people today are not likely to believe the reports even if they actually are real.

In sum, the irresponsible information distributed by individuals and the lessons learned at the cost of blood made people confused and feel lost. I think on the horizon are information filtration to protect our “information evironment”.
