The two parts in this sentence are not incompatible... they belong to the same being...so D is wrong... "apparent" suggests "belie"

但是apparent也有“明显的，显而易见”的意思啊

我记得陈琦在词汇课上讲过说surprising有提示反义转折的意思，也就是说后面independent thinking应该和前面rigid discipline矛盾，所以选belie。。
btw，琦叔说belie是超级超级高频词呵呵..

The reply above is right. "surprising" is a typical mark for this kind of tricks. I just can't understand your obsession with "negates". Could you please try to translate this sentence and understand it as a whole?

Yes, apparent is apparent, so what? what are you trying to say? Did you really understand what I was saying in the last reply?
