In the school, the duty of teacher is to teach student knowledge and help them develop a sense of critical thinking. Their own opinion on society and politics sometimes but not always may influence the students. As far as I’m concerned, some teachers oblige to make acknowledge of their view but some not.
First of all, sociology and politics teacher have necessity to tell their students. Because of their bias, some of information may be omitted by them while they give the lecture. For example, a teacher of the left wing may totally don’t understand the opinion of the right, because he doesn’t think people of the right is wise. But actually from my perspective, both side have sound reason, they just regard politics from different aspects. So it is better that they tell students their own stand and instruct them to acquire relevant information of right wing from books so that they can criticize and have their own idea. No teacher could announce or advertise for any party on the class as the class is saint and it’s better to prevent it from the political advertisement. Otherwise, teachers of science could choose not to tell the students their preference, as science is subjective. The scientific axiom or fact such as ‘1+1=2’ won’t change because of their view on society or politics. To sum up, whether telling students depends on the subject the teacher teaches.
Moreover, teachers in high school or in even more primitive institutes are prone to be more mandatory to announce their preference. Critical thinking is essential for students, and it is always formed in an early education. That’s why jingoist education of some countries begins in primary school. If a country has a strong willing to be more democratic, different views should be tolerated more especially in the early education. As a consequence, students could try to consider and compare different opinions and finally generate their own sense. And in the university, since students have been more mature, professors could just assume that they are enough critical and independent on this issue, then choose not to tell them.
In a nutshell, personal political views will influence the students severely for some extent especially in specific subject and during specific period of time which I suppose these teachers should inform students that while the others are not obligatory to tell.
