废话不多说 直接上题目和作文
题目Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products, is opening its next franchise in the town of Plainsville. The store should prove to be very successful: Nature's Way franchises tend to be most profitable in areas where residents lead healthy lives, and clearly Plainsville is such an area. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. Finally, Plainsville's schoolchildren represent a new generation of potential customers: these schoolchildren are required to participate in a fitness-for-life program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if
the assumptions prove unwarranted.

In this argument, the author asserts that Nature’s Way will be profitable in Plainsville. To support this opinion, the arguer points out that the sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time high and the local health club is successful there. Also, the author says that P’s schoolchildren will become potential consumer of Nature’s Way. Though these assertions seem to be reasonable at first glance, it is actually untenable. The reasons state as follow.

First of all, the arguer bases his or her claim partly on the fact that running shoes and exercise clothing always sold well in P. The underlying assumption is that sport equipment means health. As we all know, however, that sport could make people healthy but sport doesn’t equal to health. Perhaps there are so many athletes live in Plainsville and they often need to buy running shoes and exercise clothing. Besides, maybe Plainsville’s residents like running or doing exercise but not health food. Natural’s Way is a chain of stores selling health food but not sport equipment.

Secondly, the author draws a hasty conclusion which is based on inadequate evidence about the number of members of health club in Plainsville. The implication the author hints here is that if people like to join the heal club, they will buy lots of health-related products such as health food. Even if health club is successful and the weight training and aerobics classes are popular among Plainsville residents than ever before, it doesn’t mean that people are also interested in buying health food and health-related products, which is still unconvincing. Furthermore, it is possible that as a result of plenty exercise they believe they are sufficiently fit and healthy and do not need some other healthy products.

Also, even the fact that Plainsville’s schoolchildren are required to participate in a fitness-for-life program, it is nevertheless impossible to assess the author’s broader contention that schoolchildren will be a new generation of potential customers. Here the author assumes that schoolchildren are willing to take part in this program and it will keep on operating a few years later. Maybe this program is compulsory for every schoolchild in Plainsville while the children here are not of their own accord. Mandatory participation is no indication of genuine interest in health or fitness. Moreover, when the children grow older they may favor an unhealthy lifestyle—as a reaction to the healthy habits imposed upon them now.

In short, a better evaluation on the author’s claim required more information. To draw a better conclusion, the arguer should reason convincingly, citing some evidences that is more persuasive, and take every factor which will affect the operation of NW in P into account.
