191"Education should be equally devoted to enriching the personal lives of students and to training students to be productive workers." AM 10:17:44

In today's world, education plays a more crucial role in society than did ever before. The function of education has always been the hot issue. Some holds that education should enrich the personal lives of students and train students to be productive works as well.  In my view, however, the primary function of education should not produce various parts for a large machine of society, but make students healthy mentally and physically.  And schools and colleges should also not be the training grounds for working skills, which can be left to other special professional schools and companies.

Admittedly, students are would-be workers and nowadays the division of labor has been increasingly specialized, accordingly, society requires more and more professional workers. In order to satisfy such demand of society, educational system should and must provide vast opportunities to train students to be professional in certain field such as law, economic, and environment. It is beyond question that in higher education, college and university should offer students various specialty, from which students can learn basic knowledge and systemic methods required in the future profession. After all, without such specialists society cannot advance and people hardly fare better. In short, productive workers constitute the firmest base of flourishing country.

However, education must do far more than training specialists; what is more important is to enlighten students and to enrich personal lives of students. What students want is not merely excel in major fields and prepare for future positions, more significant to them is to understand self, to respect and tolerate others and to understand the worlds around us. Therefore, school teachers and college faculty should impart knowledge as well as a series of values and principles to students, which in return help students to become effective workers and especially to live healthy and colorful lives.

In elementary education, especially in grade schools, teachers should focus on how to instill basic social values and principles to the children. Self-confidence, independence, cooperation, honesty, rectitude and respect to others, and so force, which are the necessary virtues needed for able persons, should be given to students. For example, through my observation of my four-year old nephew, I come to know the importance of value education. Here I tell a story about his first class in kindergarten. At first his teacher told them an easy fairy tale wrote by a famous author, and later asked children to tell story one by one and then recorded what children had said. At last the teacher bound up those papers with a beautiful jacket and said that it is easy to write a book and that when children grow up, they would write good books and become great figures. From this class, I find that what teacher want to impart are self-confidence and right attitudes to look at famous figures. Now it is clear that to establish our own views of life and views of world is the primary task of education.

In higher education, the focus should be shifted from basic knowledge and values to specialization study, which is helpful to future careers of students, and higher abilities such as critical thinking, analytical capacity and good judgement. For college students, learning for detailed knowledge is less important. What is more important is learning how to quickly find out useful knowledge in the sea of knowledge and information and rapidly absorb them because particular knowledge gained from college might become obsolete when applied into work practice. Therefore, mastering a set of methods and principles benefits students all through their lives. Emphasis on working skills and professional knowledge is no doubt a waste of precious educational resource.

To sum up, given the importance of productive workers, we should not overlook the major study in college and university. Nevertheless, how to produce competent persons and how to enrich students’ personal lives are the emphasis of modern education.

Admittedly, students are would-be workers and nowadays the division of labor has been increasingly specialized, accordingly, society requires more and more professional workers( YOU SHOULD USE AND TO LINK TWO PARATACTIC SENTENCES AND ACCORDING IS JUST AN ADVERB, WHICH WOULD NOT DO THE SAME JOB AS THE TERM OF AND.)In order to satisfy such demand of society, educational system should and must provide vast opportunities to train students to be professional in certain field such as law, economic, and environment( THESE TERMS SHOULD BE PUT IN THE SAME NATURE, ALL THE NOUN OR ALL THE ABJECTIVE.). It is beyond question that in higher education, college and university should offer students various specialty, from which students can learn basic knowledge and systemic methods required in the future profession. After all, without such specialists society cannot advance and people hardly fare better. In short, productive workers constitute the firmest base of flourishing country. (我认为即使是让步,也要在结束前转折一下,支持自己的主要观点。你认为呢?)

(这里可用一句话启下。...........in different levels, like elementary education, secondary education, and the like.)

In elementary education, especially in grade schools, teachers should focus on how to instill basic social values and principles to the children. (可以用一个概念概括一下下面一组词)Self-confidence, independence, cooperation, honesty, rectitude and respect to others, and so force(FORTH), which are the necessary virtues needed for able persons, should be given to students. (例子似乎有点跑题,题目是丰富生活,你的观点是生理及心理健康,这一段似乎再说怎样成功,三处各不一样,论证力量减弱。例子问题不好掌握,多看别人会有帮助。)

(问题和前一段一样。)

To sum up, given the importance of productive workers, we should not overlook the major study in college and university. Nevertheless, how to produce competent persons and how to enrich students’ personal lives are the emphasis of modern education.

语言方面很顺畅,继续努力!!
