23"Contemporary technology makes available many small pieces of factual information. As a result, people have become so preoccupied with bits of fragmented information that they pay too little attention to the larger issues and overall perspectives."
Position: It is true that contemporary technology makes available many small pieces of factual information, but it is not correct to argue that people have become preoccupied with bits of fragmented information and pay too little attention to the larger issues and overall perspectives.
A) Contemporary technology facilitates our life by supplying us with small pieces of factual information.
B) Whether the information is helpful depends on whether it can facilitate people's work, study and life, not on its content.
C) To make full use of information supplied by modern technology, it is important to choose some that is really beneficial, not all of them.
With the development of the technology, information flood in modern society. We can, almost at any time, get whatever we want from contemporary tools, such as the high way of information and so on. Someone argue that although the bomb of information takes a large stake in our life, many small pieces of factual information it supplies have made people become so preoccupied with bits of fragmented information that they pay too little attention to the larger issues and overall perspectives. However, the facts do not seem to support this view. It is true that information has changed our life, but whether it is good does not depends on whether it is fragmented.
Undoubtedly, contemporary technology indeed facilitates our life by bringing us information, some of it is fragmented. Before about one hundred years or more, when there was no one knowing what was a television, information spread at a low speed, and this severely hindered the development of mankind. Then, telephone appeared, and it had become true to talk to somebody who was miles and miles away. And television, which told us what was happening far away, enjoyed popularity. Why did people welcome these facilities? That is because they brought information people were eager to get. Nowadays, Internet, V-A telephone and some other hi-techs have come into being, and offered us so much information, which we could not imagine several years ago. A new revolution of information has come, causing a bomb of information, which let us communicate with foreigners just as neighbors, find a book in a library just as in our own bookcase. All these, facilitates our life.
Some information is helpful for us, but there are always some not. Then, how can we tell which is which. There is a principle, that is, to consider whether it facilitates our work, study and life. Maybe some fragmented information is not helpful according to this principle, but we cannot deny all of them. On the other hand, information that concern on big scale will not be helpful sometimes. Such as some information on how to repair a bicycle, although small, facilitates our life. Information of this sort, although small, solves the problems we may meet in everyday life, and as a result, they are helpful.
Indeed, some information, on some occasions, do some harm to us, because they sometimes do not make our life or work easy, and to the contrary bring trouble to it, not for the reason that they are fragmented and limited our attention only in a tiny scale. Fragmented information, maybe, really prevent us to view the whole, but it is not their fault. In fact, it is ours. Any information has no thoughts, and whether it will bring help or harm depends on the person who receives it. Take book as a case. There are millions of books in the world, some of them give us wise, and some of them offer us something that is not very good, such as porn books. Suppose that your friend has given you a book of this kind, and how to treat it is your own business. If you have some sanity, you will surely leave it along and never touch it. But, if you have something aberrant in your mind, and cannot resist the temptation, it will bring harm to you, to be more exact, you will absorb harm from it. We all live with different kinds of information, and should choose some of it that is really beneficial for us to take in. As to those, which are of no help, or even noxious, we must resist them. |
