One thing that students don't realize when we make our selections is that we
have to consider not only how well the student has done academically and how

involved and enthusiastic they are about their science but also how good
their English is (especially how well they are able to understand the
questions that I ask) and how good a "match" they are to the *** Program
at ***. For example, sometimes we won't choose the best student because it
is clear that *** is not high up on that student's choice of programs and
the student is likely to get offers from the other places that he or she
prefers and to go elsewhere. Since we only are allowed to make 6 offers (and
this year we are not allowed to make a waiting list), we have to be pretty
sure that we have a good chance of getting the students that we accept. Of
course, we still assume that about half of the students will go elsewhere,
but if we don't think that a student ranks *** as at least "a close second"
so that we have a good chance to recruit him or her, we won't offer one of
our spots. The exception, of course, is if a student is so fantastic that we
just can resist!
Also, it depends on where the student prefers to go and why (as an
indication of the depth of their thinking about their graduate education).
biomedical sciences especially as related to understanding disease
processes, I am suspicious if the student's top choice is *** because
*** has a very small number of faculty in such areas as molecular
biology and the biological sciences and has no medical school nor even one
close by. So, unless there is a particular laboratory there that really
suits the student's interest and the head of that laboratory has already
said that he or she has space for more students, I would suspect that the
student is looking at the "name" of the institution (which frequently
derives from how hard it is for an undergraduate student to be admitted) and
not the quality of the graduate program.
